These are some items I am storing, that you may not have thought of! The curry powder and coconut milk powder, and bockwurst sausages are great for things like curry chicken ( buy some tinned chicken). The sausages can be for curry as well or served with some homemade sauerkraut and mustard. The berries are surprisingly quite firm and not mushy! You can make berry smoothies out of them with some powdered milk, or serve with creamed rice ( if you like it ). There are lots of uses for these products. They can be a little more pricey but see if you can find them on special or splash out if you can. The sausages are from Aldis ( not sure if you can get them elsewhere).

I also store food preserving items in bulk like vinegars, olive oil, salt and sugar. Everything cept the olive oil is fine as Homebrand so is cheap as chips.
The ability to store excess in the absence of refrigerators/freezers is worth it imho.

beckles - if you travel into Fortitude Valley at some time, in the McWhirters building is a Indian Grocer. They have dirt cheap bulk pulses and spices. Typically you will get a 500g bag of a spice for the price of one of those tiny cardboard tube spice containers from the supermarket. They also have things like bulk coconut, coconut milk and powdered coconut milk at a really cheap price. Usually whilst I am there I head over to China town and stock up on Sriracha and the Maesri Thai curry paste tins (Green, Red, Yellow, Masaman etc). If your used to buying mixed curry powder, it is made up of ground coriander, turmeric and cumin. I recommend you also get mustard seeds (whole) and your chilli powder from here as well depending on how spicey you like your curries. Another tip is to get bulk bay leaves (they are cheap as chips) because storing things like rice, lentils, beans with bay leaves helps prevent any pests getting to them (weevils etc). Insects absolutely hate bay leaves (it kills them) and it discourages mould growth as well. I use crushed bay leaf "tea" as a natural pest/mildew spray on my vege patch as well.

LOVE those bottled sausages - from Aldi!! Never thought of coconut milk either-we eat loads of thai/swedish food, so guess I need to make a seperate SE Asian stash to keep the cook happy.

I'll get some of those snags to try next time I go to Aldi! Not sure if these are considered unusual or not, but Black & Gold / Homebrand 'Quick cooking peas' - have a longer shelf life than the packet suggests. When we were kids, Mum used to have lots of them in the pantry, all 2 - 3 years out of date, and they were fine to eat. Also, I never would have thought stinky olf bay leaves would come in handy other than flavouring lasagne! May have to store me some of those too

No mate, but good point - we have a food section, maybe go and start a thread with this question there - again, really good idea.

The bottled sausages are designed to last long periods of time? Yeah date is for at least 1 1/2 years! The Chinese dried sausages can last for years. These are hung in dry/very low humidity rooms. Very tasty too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_sausageWe had some that after 3 years, we cooked them, they were still very yummy!
