I've been thinking about doing this, he doesn't say what type of glue, I assume a contact cement would be the go.

A decent epoxy resin ought to do the trick, but the decent ones are normally only available in bulk.

I have never seen that done before, I was watching it at work and one of the old fellas said his Dad used to do that for them when they were kids, then he said I still have the shoe horn I think if I can find it you can have it, So I will take him up on that, he also said his Dad had an anvil in the shed as well, I said I would love that so he going to check for me. So it was a great afternoon at work.

Epoxy is not flexible, might crack Contact adhesive would work pretty well and I have used it for shoe repair E6000 is an industrial glue that is SUPERBLY strong and flexible and will probably work the best
There was a guy who walked around Australia in a Stormtrooper outfit for charity who used tyres to retread his shoes.
