What are people's suggestions on ponchos, since poncho's offer rain protection, potential shelter, water collection and are light. Cheap is good [ebay has them in Auscam for about $30], though any thoughts are welcomed.

depends on how permanent or how lasting you need it to be.
I carry 2 types. 1 is the disposable type (a buck each?) and I keep that in hiking kits and Uniqlo ultralight jackets as back up.
In my bug out bag I have a slightly more expensive (3.50 ?) also plastic vinyl kinda material poncho which can double as a ground sheet also.
What I dislike are my army days super thick ponchos. Sadly SG is too warm for those to be really all that effective.
I always feel that a water-windproof jacket + thin plastic poncho would be more than sufficient.

I carry a poncho, I got it off ebay, It is quite good quality I have used it a few times while camping, I have also set up a lean to shelter with it just for practice it works fine, All of my mini survival kits have a large plastic bay in them which can be cut if needed to used as a poncho, I have done this with them and they work well but get very hot inside.

I went camping with a bloke who had two germ and shepards. He used his poncho as a growing sheet in his tent for the dogs. They did not damage it with all their frolicking. I bought one as soon as I could afford it. Ultra sil and are over $100 but tough and not disposable at all. Come in the silicon type and normal vinyl. Silicon one is top model

It's hard to know before you get them if they're going to be ok or not. I have a few of the really cheap [and potentially life saving] poncho of thin plastic. Fine for the pocket or a small day pack or something or as back up for the BOB [to which i have] but not really for more extended use. I'm perhaps looking for a cheap option of rain ware for a couple of kits and now I'm thinking I might just op-shop a coat here and there instead. Can't really use them as a shelter but the cost-benefit of having warm and dry might work in favor of the coats. like that? www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sea-to-Summit-Ultra-Sil-Tarp-Poncho-/181949754814?hash=item2a5d0cedbe:g:CQcAAOSwcBhWX6uQ

I would be all over the RAF coat and pants at that price, but it would only cover about half of me!

Imho head to good aussie disposal stores and try on ex army stuff.
I have two ex dutch camo ponchos, i was out at bonnidoon (oh the serenity lol) on a block where it was slightly raining. I sat on a log on a trail with my poncho on and 4 motorbikes rode past me literally touching me and had no idea i was a person lol.
They are heavier duty but cover well and a heavy pack. They can be doubled as rain gear and or makeshift meat carriers as well.
I also have ex dutch army gortex. Please be aware, gortex lost its patent years back and theres plenty of claimed 'gortex' which is rubbish. Good gortex should breath as well as keep you dry for at least 10 days of heavy rain before it lets water in. Ex army older stuff is the best ive ever found yet and the price is always really cheap compared. Plus, reinforced stitching, heavy zippers and more.
The other issue is mate, your not a small fella, its best to try gear on so that it fits you perfectly.
