THE heart of the European capital Brussels has been rocked by multiple bomb explosions at its international airport and its underground metro train line, killing at least 34 people and injuring dozens more.
The city went into immediate lockdown and its terror alert raised to the maximum “level 4” after the blasts at the transport hubs, causing widespread panic. A massive manhunt in underway to find the perpetrators.
There were two apparent large explosions shortly after 8am local time, believed to be carried out by suicide bombers, at a check in desk at Brussels Zaventem Airport, immediately grounding all flights in and out of the air hub and causing panic among the thousands of passengers, many covered in dust and in distress, and running from the scene.
Belgian state media says 20 people were killed in the train and 14 at the airport.
Some passengers were led to the tarmac for safety while others were told to abandon their luggage including hand luggage and flee to outside the terminal and to buses evacuating them — with airport officials co-ordinating it as women and children first — from the area.
Such was the size of the blasts initial reports from authorities was the bomb device may have come from a train station below the terminal building.
About an hour after that, there were reports of an explosion at the Maalbek metro train station, close to all the EU institution buildings including the EU Commission and Council of the European Union and home to politicians and staff from across Europe. There were reports of more casualties there as heavy palls of smoke could be seen coming out of the Schumann district. Roads were closed and all rail networks shutdown.
