If anyone is interested in what sort of methods the government has for spying on people, I suggest checking out a pommy show now on ABC called "Hunted".
Basically the show challenges several couples to leave home at short notice and evade the "agents" who are chasing them.
While there was controversy about some of the claims that the agents were using traffic surveillance cameras etc, which in reality they had no access to (cos they're not real cops), the first few episodes that I saw did give an indication of the sort of methods the cops use for catching people on the run.
Australia is obviously nowhere as well populated with surveillance cameras as the UK (or China where I live, where every second set of traffic lights now seems to have cameras recording car details), however some of the less obvious things they could draw on (eg. cameras built into ATMs) do show the sort of tech that is available for the powers that be to snoop on people.
The show was broadcast earlier in the week, but I think is on iView for another week or so yet.

Yeah, some of the participants did seem to be particularly retarded in their continual use of phones. One other thing I found interesting in this, and also another one-off show filmed a few years ago that it was based on, was the level of paranoia that set in after a very short period of time.
