We have all been there with our children! You have slaved over a hot stove to prepare a nutritious meal for your little angels and then it starts! "Ewww Yuck", "But I don't like brussels sprouts", "Do I have to eat this?" "Can we have pizza instead?", "Just Three mummy pls" (bites that is)! When we were little if you didn't eat your food you were given one of two responses to why you had to, "Think of all the starving children in Africa, you are lucky to have that! (yup sure lucky to have liver) or "Because I said so", was the other answer. My husband tells me if he did not eat it for dinner then he would get it for breakfast, if he didn't eat it for brekky he would have to eat it for lunch! By this stage it would have been horrid! Now as a prepper I have found myself saying to my children, "You need to get used to eating what is put in front of you, because one day it may be all you will have to eat!" It is true we do have to get used to eating what is put in front of us! Now is the time to get your children into the habit of eating what is given to them! Get them used to food storage meals. Encourage them to at least try their food, with my little one we say that she must have at least three bites, and then you can build up to them actually having to eat it all! Make sure you watch the portion size though as trying to make them eat too much is not good for them. Tell them if they don't try then there will be nothing later on (like dessert or if they come saying they are hungry)! The point is they must try the food in question! This is important, as you do not want to be struggling with your children to get them to eat while in SHTF, you are already under enough stress! You also do not want your children getting sick and weak from bad nutrition, just add another burden. As preppers we need to use some tough love with our loved ones from time to time! (thats me trying to look tough)

Great thread Remmy!
A bit about my little family..My youngest, Bella was born at 24weeks. Quite a bit earlier than god intended.
She had just under 9 months in NICU to start her life off. In this time she was on and off a ventilator which left some pretty nasty scaring in her throat making her first few years of eating difficult.
She is 4 now and still needs a bottle a few times a day, mainly because she has trouble eating and does not eat enough solids to get the full nutrients she needs.
SHTF, ive read up on making your own baby formula, but often worry...will this be sufficient?

I have a 4yo Bella too Wayne! Does your Bella have the toddler formula with her bottle? Is it something you can stock up on? Or something like sustegen, where you could just add a scoop to powdered milk? Good post Remmy! Because I've been working long hours the past 2 months, hubby has been cooking (limited menu with him lol), so our miss has fallen into bad eating habits and isn't as adventurous as she once was. Nice timely reminder to start working on expanding her palate. We joke around her that an apocalypse for her is a world wide cucumber shortage - that girl can easily eat 3-4 cucumbers a day if allowed!

The stepdaughter has a boy, 5 yrs. If he doesn't like what we put out for him, ie, ravioli, I say"What, don't you like squids eyes with fish guts?? "Oh yeah, I LOVE that!" Plate licked clean!! Reverse psychology works - till age 7-8, then, well, your stuffed!!

You could purée in some child's vitamins perhaps during SHTF. You can also get some kids protein powder. My little one is also four and would live on toast, yoghurt and frozen berries! Haha

My 3.5yo girl is often picky with food - but we pay a game each mealtime: "What's in my bowl?". She has to name each ingredient and eat it. It works for the time being (with no assumptions made for the future), but I'd rather have my kids know what they're eating that be completely ignorant.

Wayne, i have a recipe for home made formula heres hoping it worked, if not ill pull my hair out, lol and her not eating enough, have you found she prefers certain textures or consistencies? it could be possible to slowly introduce more and more foods by preparing them in ways to make them more appealing to her. i have heard that with many premmies, its because of how long they tube feed them for, is this about right for your littlest?

btw, back to the topic of food and kids, the only thing my youngest wont eat is pizza. yep. go figure. yet she will happily eat a breville with all the toppings as a filling. weird huh. other than that, i have a strict "eat it or starve" rule. and i often make things very few parents serve, lol, like quinoa, polenta, couscous, just to ensure they hare good with most new textures and flavours, so long as the flavour is good and yes, herbs and spices, as well as stevia are part of my preps

If you mash it up with pepper and tomato and Worcestershire Sauce and spreed it on ya bread it's yummy! Also makes Corned beef patties or rissoles! And meat for a stew!
