I watched this show "The Brain" on SBS last night - and was blown away!!!!!
It's a Chinese show, where contestants show how smart they are! Anyway, this lad was on - unfortunately I can't find the video with English subtitles - he is from a little village out woop woop! He is mildly retarded. His expertise - solving calculus sums greater than can be done on a calculator in his head!!!
He attempts 3 sums. The thirdd one, after his total is the Chinese symbols +/- 1.
Start at 28 minutes - the first sum is at 38:00 minutes, then they go onto the other two sums. The third sum he is challenged by a calculus teacher from one of the prestigious universities in China.
Remember, it's all done in his head!!! After the third sum, the crying judge is apologising for giving him such a hard challenge!!
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did-I've watched it 5 times today, and can't believe what I am seeing!

I also forgot to add - he only finished Grade 5 in school, because he was bullied so much, and none of the schools would take him in!

Intelligence is an interesting topic for me. Most people don't understand that 15% of an American population [similar IQ to Australia] can't comprehend a simple sports question, 25% can't answer 2. That people can be that dumb. They also probably don't understand how smart some people can be in comparison, an example for me is the claims that Trump is dumb, which is hillarious when you consider his IQ is 155-160 and he topped his business school and he turned 1 million into 10 billion.
Iq is 'G' or general intelligence, so it's more about computation ability and ability to learn. It's also not necessarily tied to wisdom, so you can be super smart without any sense, though they could potentially learn sense quicker than most.
This kid might show great skills in a particular computation as shown, though as you said was mildly retarded, so probably either autistic or an idiot savant [or both]. Having great skills in one area does not equate to intelligence, much like listening to 'stars' who might be great actors/personalities about philosophical ideas isn't always a good plan for wisdom.

IQ is really not about what you know its more about your ability to work things out, how do you solve this problem! You can have people with high IQs who haven't done very well in life and those with average IQs who are successful because they have worked hard to get where they are!

You can have people with high IQs who haven't done very well in life and those with average IQs who are successful because they have worked hard to get where they are! Generally a higher IQ would know 'more' in comparison, as they have absorbed, understood and can recall more on average. Obviously this would depend on where their focus and exposure has been. For instance, a university Maths Professor [typically 160IQ+] might know more about mathematics and be able to solve more mathematics than almost anyone else, though might not understand how to light a fire. The thing is, the Maths Professor could learn and be able to do, at least on average fire lighting faster given the same stimulus than most people if they put their mind to it. IQ can have a component of what you know, typically an element of vocabulary and it's nuances/comparisons.

In the long run though, even if the high IQ has the ability to learn something faster (because they are able to work things out quickly), the lower IQ may have to work a bit harder at something but eventually they equal out in what knowledge they both possess! Knowledge really depends on what opportunities a person has had in life (as you stated both focus and exposure). So you can still have someone with a high IQ who does not have a lot of knowledge because they have never been given the opportunity to learn!

As in don't know the answer or don't even understand the question? I was wondering the same thing. I would comprehend sports questions, but as most sports bore the heck out of me, I'd be hard pressed to answer a basic question.

Likewise. I can just see me in the Malay jungle in 1942,
Sentry: Who won the 1940 AFL Grand Final?"
Me: "Umm...AFL...that's a game right?"
BANG!

Me: "Umm...AFL...that's a game right?" They (ie, the AFL company) say "it's more than a game". No, it is a game. Nothing but a game. Nothing more than a game. A game wherein a group of supposedly grown men in undersized shorts waste an afternoon kicking an inflated pig bladder around a field that would be put to much better use as a rifle range.

I actually get why the players, officials, etc are interested, because they get paid a fortune.
What I don't get is why anyone else has more than a passing interest, and to be devastated that your team didn't win (as many people are), WTF is that all about?
I watched the news tonight (yeah I know, why bother), of course there was the usual 50% of the time spent on sport, but because of the origin match we got another 20% as well.

Or a nice big market garden. I'm going to a community event tomorrow covering stuff like urban agriculture, which has been getting me thinking of places where food could be grown in the city (kinda like the Victory gardens in the UK in WW2).

Hey Tyburn during ww2 in the UK many parks, tennis courts, tops of buildings and even the moat around the tower of London were used for gardens!
Here is a lovely clip from WW2!

My father tells me stories of public open spaces in Germany during WWII being used for growing vegetables. He still hates carrots as that was most of what he ate for much of the time.

I know in the UK they created characters called Dr Carrot and Potato Pete to encourage people to eat more of them!
