A couple of times the generator has sparked on start up and blown a big puff of smoke. It then won't start. I usually leave it to rest for an hour before I try again. This morning, sparks, a loud bang and wouldn't start. I've only had it a few months and started using it in the last fortnight. I bought it new. It's done this twice in the last week. It's not white smoke and only lasts a second. I'm in the middle of trying to fix the solar system after a storm killed it, so needing the generator as a back up. What the heck is wrong with it?

Have you checked the oil levels? Is it still under warranty?

Oil level is fine and yes under warranty. After letting it rest for an hour it's running like nothing happened (again). It's an Aldi generator admittedly. I normally use my solar system to charge devices. This was supposed to be temporary or only when needed for power tools etc..

Try pulling out over a few times without fuel and switched off before really trying to start it. May be fuel in the wrong time and place or some other backfire type issue. Like trying to start a fuel flooded motor

What sort of engine is it 2 stroke petrol diesel

can you post a link to the generator online ?
is it a small pull start genny or a larger key start model ?

I'd say take it back and upgrade to a better model, these Aldi gennies have a lot of complaints of failures, dropped pistons, overloads, not starting at all etc. Try super cheap for an alternative that won't quite break the bank if you are budget conscious to fork out for a honda.

I have a Honda generator bought off Gumtree for not much more than a song. My first one was over 30 years old and did me for 5 years (weekends) till I put diesel in by mistake. My Wishlist has a diesel generator on it, and solar.

On smaller genis sometimes the over fuel while starting causing backfires etc Like other posters though What type fuel Where are sparks coming from Is there an unusual smell Is there any oils in air leaner Oil coming out of exhaust Some small motors also have a temp cut off too We have had people disconnect them on smaller motors that over heat If it does have one that could be faulty

Your not giving us much to go on, as a stab in the dark maybe the carby needle ans seat are not cutting off completely so flooding the fuel bowel, meaning when you try to start the engine is getting to much fuel which would show as black smoke, and rough running..... not sure about sparks though.

Doing a quick search, it appears there is quite a range of Aldi generators including inverter types. So as everyone states make and model will help.

I don't think we're going to get a response on make/model.
Generator isn't something you should go cheap on particularly if its not in regular use. I know this seems counter intuitive but standing inactive is worse than a little bit of usage every week, have a test schedule for any generator that includes load testing.
In saying that, I've had a couple Hondas stand for 5 years... threw new oil and fuel in them and both started up with little trouble.

If they are like the briggs and strattons, they tend to burn the exhaust valve, and this will make starting hard and give smoke and sparks out of the exhaust. They also lack in power
