I like the ritual of dry tinder, twigs, matches, and an evening spent maintaining and watching the fire.

Just burnt the dry thatch off a bunch of black boys - aka grass trees - on my block. Nothing is easier to light than this stuff even when everything around it is drenched with water mid winter.

Palm fronds are like that too! Must be the oils in them!

Growing up it was always birch bark and matches. Fatwood if you could find it (stumps).

Easiest or funnest way, Easiest is lighter with paper and fire starter. the funnest, I love the primitive stuff so I love my bow drill, recently I have been playing with a flint and steel striker, I made some char cloth and charred some punk wood it works great with the flint and steel also works great with the magnifying glass. I am still trying to master the bow drill, I can get it to work with a few little trick but not efficient enough with it yet. I will keep practicing. I also like doing the one stick fire test with a knife. One stick one knife and a feral rod, split the stick down feather it make some dust then start with the feral rod using the back of your blade. I am finding the hardest part of friction fire is getting the right timber. Anton I would be collecting some of your black-boy steams to use for friction fire as they are suppose to be the best timber in Australia for it. Paul
