I've received a quantity of empty 10L plastic bottles that used to hold distilled water. I plan to fill these up with tap water for additional storage. is there anything I need to consider with this? Can I count on stored tap water to be potable indefinitely (without further treatment) using these containers?

Yep, a cool, dark place for storage is the go. If in doubt, boil or chlorinate before use.

But my question is if it's tap water can I count on it being safe for a period of time without treatment? And if so, how long? The fact that you say "if in doubt" means I'm now in doubt!

Yep, a cool, dark place for storage is the go. If in doubt, boil or chlorinate before use. What he said. Water is chlorinated, this evaporates out of the water if exposed to air and sunshine [heat and UV]. If is also used up if it oxidises [breaks down] pathogens. By sealing it and keeping it out of light, it will effectively stay in solution and therefore keep the water sterile. If anything I'd rate it higher than bottled water, as I know for sure it's got a little treatment done to it as opposed to bottle water that I would be uncertain of, yet at the same time doesn't really go off either. So how long is forever. Water underground is also sterile for instance for similar reasons.

I have read the following rules of thumb:
1/. Treat all bottles with a bleach solution prior to filling. 2/. Store in a cool, dry place out of sunlight. 3/. Rotate on an annual basis or treat prior to usage. 4/. Some places suggest introducing a few drops of unscented chlorine prior to storage. Others say if it's chlorinated tap water, no additional treatment required.
The issue is, as it is with most long term storage/prepping, there is a lot of anecdotal information but not much rigorously tested. There have been people claiming to have ingested water after five years of storage. Not saying you should do that, but take that into account.
