David Kobler, for the newer folk who might be unfamiliar was one of the people from 'Practical Preppers' of Doomsday prepper fame and here he talks about the defensive wall he has that doesn't look like one.

He makes some valued points but there is one thing to always keep in mind with plants and shrubs
If they cant see in then you cant see out
plus they are a fire hazard
what I have done is I built a very solid fence around the "house yard "of copper logs star pickets wallaby wire and barbed wire yes I live in a rural setting so barbed was no problem
the copper logs are 3m long buried 800mm in the ground so it leaves 2.2m sticking out at the moment it just looks like a rural fence nice and tidy around the outer yard of the home but if need be that extra hight on the posts becomes useful so raising the total height of the fence with bared wire to make it very hard to cross so as to slow an intruders down
its also not possible to ram the fence as there just enough tree stumps and large rocks on the outside to bring most vehicles to a complete stop
