Maybe the US will maybe wake up now that their best ally in the region has had enough of just been used as a sex tourist hot-spot. But maybe they will now start basing even more troops and navy ships here in aus, making us a even bigger target if shit happens.

Yep, I imagine his bodyguards are getting annoyed at the latest turn of events. Was interesting that the defence minister was trying to tone down the rhetoric a few weeks back, basically saying Duterte didn't have the lastest info, that he wasn't anti-US etc. Now wonder if he was hedging his bets, guessing that he would have another new boss in a few months. Also wonder what the Phillippines is supposed to do for all this new investment? No doubt stop complaining about incursions in the South China Sea (one of the islands China claims is 2,000km from China but less than 100km from the Philippines). Wonder how well a standdown on that issue will go down with the ordinary Philippino voter?

Everybody is surprised that he is still alive already. Someone as bold as he is about the drugs issue over there does not generally have to wait long to have his ticket punched. Especially one 1 of the senators husband/BF is one of the drug lords.

I would dare say Japan and South Korea are the US's best allies in the region. Mutually beneficial for all parties.

True, but if the Philippines allow China to take over one of the US bases or build a new port in the southern islands etc, then they gain an even stronger foothold in the South China Sea. Then again, it may turn out like Chinese investment in Sri Lanka --- they won the right to build and run a major port there (which pissed the Indians off no end, as it provided a stop off point for the Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean), but the government was voted out due to a perception of corruption and taking Chinese bribes, with the new government now stalling the project. (Something that may very well happen in the Phillipines too now)
