Does anyone else feel the need to prep for the shed?
Just doing some welding thisarvo and thought, i wonder how much flux core ive got on that spool?
When i think about it, theres heaps more stuff i need that is consumables for the shed should a situation occur.
A trip to Bunnings or online shopping might not be around.

While I dont actually have a 'shed' I agree with the sentiment. (I really like sea containers over sheds)
For me this extends to raw materials aluminium, steel, wood... Should always have a nice collection of various sizes, thicknesses and grades. This also should include things like wire, common electronics components, soldier, oils, greases, sheet gaskets, rubber, nails, screws ect.
And you can never have too many tools! I couldnt count the amount of times I've had to modify tools to get a job done, always helps to have a few spares.
I think the ability to repair things is going to be key post SHTF. Everything breaks... Everything.

Having moved house 7 times in 8 years I'm torn between collecting/hoarding and discarding/decluttering!

When you think about it, having general spares and consumables for maintenance is a prep in itself. The type and quantity of these preps (like any other prep) really depends on what each individual thinks is worth having, based on their reasoning of what they need to prepare for.
So yes, it's worth having spares, tools, and materials on hand. The difference is where on the scale of "a few spare tap washers and an adjustable spanner" to "a complete hardware store in the backyard" we sit.

I wish I had the space for hoarding materials. I certainly hoard tools.

Thought I'd show off some of my shed The "wings" are two shipping container doors and there's about to be another shelving unit in the center that will also act as a door into the room behind. It's still a work in progress and a bit of a pig sty right now, but I'm, slowly getting there. I would like to get to the point where I can say "I can make that" and have all the tools and materials on hand to do so. Clearly that will never be the case for everything, and I have a leaning towards electronics, metalwork and woodwork, still I guess that covers a heck of a lot.

Yeah, my Dillon 550, I was wondering if anyone would spot that I am not by nature an organised person, I have crap everywhere normally, but now that I'm starting to get the shed ship shape it's amazing to just turn around from the bench and pick out the tool I need, whereas I used to spend 5 minutes rummaging through piles of junk only to give up and use a different tool.

Plus, i then end up buying screws or bits of stuff and find out i have 3 other sets later on when i move something! Im working on a shed extension and another bigger shed in just for a heap of stuff i do, a battery bay long bench for everything charging. A tool board, a welding board, a harvesting area with a cool room, areas for my vices, for my reloading gear for my arrow and bow stuff, plus my survival stuff which i can grab easily, ahh first world problems, too much stuff whaaaaaaa

That's a pig sty?? If you can get into my workshop container I'm having a good day... My approach is much more unorganised than that. Grey's description of 'piles of junk' is fairly close but at least my tools are all in toolboxes & metal crates.
I love the door concept but would never work for me, I've had too many times where the wind has picked up the doors and smashed it into the side of the container... tools and consumables would go EVERYWHERE!
I really like your goal of being able to make most things just with what you have on hand, its one I share but have a long way to go!
Good inspiration anyway, thanks token. Very jealous to hear of your 4 containers... I've still only got 2 x 20 footers trying to find the cash for a 3rd so I can make a U shape and put a cover over it for somewhere to work on larger projects.

In my case the doors are actually inside as I've enclosed the container on two sides. I don't have a current photo but here's one taken in Jan this year This is from inside the container between the above-pictured doors looking out. It's all WAY more finished now, but you can see one of the 6 shutters has been installed and the 2nd one is being fabbed at the time. With these shutters the workshop is as 'indoors' or as 'outdoors' as I like by just deciding how many shutters to open. So when it's complete the wind and weather won't be a problem. It's not a huge area, that shutter is about 2.5x2M and that's really the largest project I can work on. If I decide to build another motorhome that'll have to be outside

Thanks for posting, very nice idea on the shutters, I like it. I've only had this place a couple years so not very set up in terms of work spaces, something to move towards. On a side note LOVE the view from the workshop. Furthest I've been up the east coast is the glass house mountains, looks like a beautiful place.

I have 1 x 40ft high cube container as storage shed up on steel footers at a 24acre property i am currently selling. I also have a 20ft standard container at my urban home as a shed. and i have just cleared an area at my new block and put in 2 x standard 40fters for storage/shed.

So you're loosing one with the sale of the block, ah well. I'd love a second block! At this stage in my life I don't have the capital to have land that isn't my residence though...
What's the thinking behind putting them side by side? Looks like you've got plenty of space, even 3-4m apart gives you a nice sheltered space between them.

What's the thinking behind putting them side by side? Looks like you've got plenty of space, even 3-4m apart gives you a nice sheltered space between them. I started with a 24acre parcel i got very very cheap. I used the equity from that block to squeeze a small house loan out of the bank and bought an old weatherboard house in the same small town. Ive been fixing it up and adding value to it. Due to that value increase and having paid it off some, we used that as security against another small loan for the new block and shock horror, the broker who got it even fell off his chair in surprise, we got it! Mate, its been a journey and im grateful to God because we have too many kids and only a small income. Now its time to work hard to sell the first block, finish some work at the new block, move there and sell the house in town, and start some heavier bug in prepping, and homesteading. As for the containers being together, they are just temporary atm. Used for two separate storages. They sit on cinder blocks (besser) (don't sit them on cinder blocks btw they crack). Long term i might put them up on steel with concrete bases in the dirt and weld them together and make a studio or another dwelling, add another container, dunno yet and need to get the coin and time in on some other areas before that.
