When I get a bigger rifle, for sure. I currently have a .22 and a 12g - I'm not yet convinced of the cost/labour benefit of reloading these as yet. Of course, when I get larger calibres & handguns, that will be a different story. I wouldnt bother reloads on a rim fire shell as ive seen such but they are way too inaccurate imo. But the 12g i would absolutely get a Lee second hand reloading press. I have one and way easier than other rifle reloading, not to mention fun, as well as giving the ability to change loads in shells if you need to. i paid under $300 for mine second hand, twas stoked! Having said that i have a lot of friends who state 'it probably costs more as shells cost this right now' and i get that, but that then means im not self sufficient, i have to go to 'the man' again to get stuff. Also, i dont trust that prices and other things will stay that way. Make sure you have the right wads for the right shells and with some clay shot the winy primers wont seat. try to find shells 8 year old if possible as wads on newer stuff can be almost impossible to find. I guarantee anyone who reloads with the Lee 12 g press will thank me for it. EDIT, i cant speak for this one, mines different to this link, more metal www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lee-Load-All-II-12-Gauge-Shotshell-Reloading-Press-90013-/331991485990?hash=item4d4c3c0e26:g:-VAAAOxyBjBTRfvdI use that exact press and have found reloading to be very useful IF i reload buckshot and slugs. They are incredibly expensive compared to birdshot so if you get the molds for the shot and slug you can reload at a fraction of the cost. Wads are a little hard to find. I found about 3,000 waa12h (1 and 1/4 ounce) as well as about a thousand 3/4 ounce wads sitting at the back of an old gun store and bought the lot. I havent found any since then. If shells are an issue rpgfirearms.com.au has a link to buying shells by the thousand and it is relatively cheap

.22 and 12 gauge - generally not worth reloading, though I can [and have] do both if need be. I use birdshot for fun [cheap] and I have buckshot if need be. --------- AustempNot sure on your load you use now, this one if a fairly common load for 9mm. It's easy to do and it's important you follow a few key safety steps such as watching the powder go in [to make sure it's there] and not double loading, to which I make sure I use powders that will overflow on a double load to mitigate that problem. Next time you're down our way I'll show you bud, it's a piece of pi__ Projectile weight 125 / $0.06 Pistol AP70N 3.8 / $0.02 - older prices 2kg @ $135. Even current prices won't change that much because it's 7000/lb. Equipment/brass wear $0.02 Primers $0.03 cheap russian primers, had no issues Total $0.15 - if I didn't count wear it would be 13c each. Fps 1055 Ft/lbs 308.8 Joules 418.7 You can buy cast projectiles at a reasonable rate. A much simpler approach for only a little extra cost. If casting your own, it's fairly easy and it makes things even cheaper particularly if you get the lead for free. I highly recommend a large pot with tap if you're doing a lot, I can pump them out about 500 an hour or so, so it's easy. I have considered melting the lead from batteries though I buy it from a dealer or you could get wheel weights and sort. I suggest you use side cutters to see if the material is lead or zinc as zinc will screw your whole batch and melt it separately in an old pot/can and do lots of research on the safety side of things so you know what you're getting into as water turns to steam and steam makes molten lead spray through the air .

I don't reload at all currently.
I'd like to reload 9mm for cost and availability of what I want.
And I'd like to reload .308 for accuracy.
But at the moment "it's on the list"

I have considered melting the lead from batteries... I have several dead batteries, I have heard that people worry about the chemicals involved, any thoughts on that? I'd love to get another 100kgs+ of lead from them. ...you could get wheel weights and sort. I suggest you use side cutters to see if the material is lead or zinc as zinc will screw your whole batch and melt it separately in an old pot/can and do lots of research on the safety side of things so you know what you're getting into as water turns to steam and steam makes molten lead spray through the air . I've spent the last 2 weeks or so smelting wheel weights. It seems that if you keep the temperature down the zinc just floats along with all the steel weights and clips. So I do sort (and use side cutters as you say to test weights I'm not sure of) but if a few get through I don't mind because they get scooped off. Do they contaminate the mix if they don't melt?

Also, i dont trust that prices and other things will stay that way. ... This is the case at present with 38 special, the factory rounds cost about the same as raw brass. But as you say I think it's better to be less dependent on "the man". Sure we still have to buy primers, powder etc, but I still like the idea (and practice) of being able to largely DIY.

With the current ups and downs and the ignoring of probable criminality by the FBI, and the outrage and boiling hostility of a great number of people. I'm beginning to change my mind about problems coming out of this election. ---------- Austemp - yeah bud, it's a good deal and I knew you didn't have the gear, it was more about I wasn't certain of the performance you were looking for. The one I mentioned was 125grain at 1050fps, which is about where many commercial loads are anyhow, though I also run them hotter, aka make more noise There's an investment to get started in it though.

Just a friendly reminder to mark your calendars for Wednesday, 9 November. At some point between 11am and 2pm AEST we should learn the result of the US presidential election and all hell could break loose. I'm planning a super sized grocery shop for the 8th and I plan to increase our cash on hand. The old adage is still mostly true, if America sneezes then the the rest of the world catches a cold. The markets are more concerned with Trump victory as he will internalize America, bring back jobs -Return the military to US soil cut off illegal immigration, reduce foreign imports. So there is concern for contagion, with the EU, Japan and China all furiously printing money and accelerating debt but still not making headway, even with negative interest rates. Global economy is slowing down and their is deflation. The global economy is a house of cards and it won't take much for it to fail with ensuing wars. The US election is also very polarizing and riots which can lead to civil war can easily break out due to narrative and lies the main stream media have been pumping out. A rigged election or Trump win could easily set it off. This is scary stuff with all the wiki leaks of corruption just being ignored by the main stream media can cause a lot of upset.

US citizens go into a prepping phase every election as do gun sales go up. Current sales of prepping goods is way up more than usual. I have had some communicaiton with US perppers who have links to supplies, they all say sales are going crazy. Yes the UK perppers did the same for Brexit, but it is a little more intense in the US. From vandalism to physical assaults to large scale race riots to terrorist bombings and mall stabbings, STHFPlan's Stefan Gleason notes that social disorder has become a more prominent feature of life in a polarized America.

Anyone watch space weather? Solar storm incoming 8 or 9 Nov. Not bad enough to be worrying about, but it did have me thinking of the outcome of a blackout in the US on or just after election night. Perhaps people would have other explanations for the blackout.
As I said though, it is of interest for aurora watchers I think and not preppers so I'm not really expecting blackouts.

Tomatoes - have you ever read the Perseid Collapse by Steven Konkoly? You've pretty much just nailed the story (except it doesn't fall on election night).

Welcome, Spatial - would be great if you could introduce yourself here: ausprep.com/board/1/introduction-boards Good to have you on the site! I agree with pretty much everything you've written. I'm not suggesting the global economy is going to fail overnight, but I think we'd be naive to think the global economy is robust and could withstand a major ripple from the US and/or a global conflict.

Ordered nearly $500 in groceries- over half of which will go into the stockpile.
My father, a staunch Republican, informed me last night that if Trump wins he is moving to Canada 🇨🇦.

Need to buy more powder/primers if Clinton wins. Mass gun ban panic.... ADI powder is sold in the US rebadged. We don't make primers for civilian market locally ... joy!
If trump wins, may be we will have a shortage of bricks and other wall building materials.... Okay I am kidding, I just dont know what he is really up to.
