Id lost a contact a while back for deer to harvest for meat, but recently after putting the feelers out, got a few more farming them. One contact was a good drive and price point was a tad high compared to what i used to get, and i wanted something closer as well. Recently i got that contact, an old cocky that i've hit it off with really well since a first visit, and today i ended up grabbing a couple of live fallow from him. Price was really good! and hes not too far away either, so im stoked, and so is he, as a lot of folk have no idea as to just how good a chewin venison really is, and to me thats a good thing, and a bad thing. Its a good thing in that i can selfishly pick them up for cheap, and a bad thing in that i really wish more people knew about how good a eating they are, so that those who farm them can do really well off farming them. The other awesome side to this is that the cocky insisted on coming out to my block and helping me set up my property to farm them and coach me in the entire thing. Youve gotta love living in the country, a good many folk can be very friendly and helpful, im humbled. Here's a couple of pics anyways, just got finished getting one quartered and in the fridge, dogs and cats and everything else are all fat and snoring as well.

Theres a few farms over near my folks old property and they were always getting out (cost me an insurance claim once). I hear the fencing is more difficult than sheep... Care to share anything you've been taught by your friendly country friend?
I must say I too love the country life... Have only been in this area three years and I know heaps of friendly and helpful people, the nearest nown is 6km away and lots of people seemed to know us before we meet them lol. I had a bloke pull up to help me get unbogged in the middle of winter cause he saw me from the road... Introduced himself and informed me his grand daughter goes to school with my daughter. Life is slower out here for sure but not gossip or info about townsfolk!
Compared to our last place place in suburbia, we were there 5 years and I left knowing one neighbour next to me and one a street over. If you saw a car drive passed you didnt know if they were local or not and nobody ever even waved.

Almost identical response to yours out here mate, been out this way for over 3 years now, folk know about you before youve met them, people talk in small towns, hard to hide. Pulled a couple of locals out of a bog recently too. Its not hard to lend a hand or be helped if you ask out this way, some really nice people, but the same goes from my side as well.
in a way you could hide a lot better in a city town thats for sure, but who would want to live there is my opinion, traffic, too many people, too busy, noise, violence, theft, smog, no thanks if i dont have to. Slower, quieter and open spaces of nature is for me.
As for deer fencing they can technically jump 2.4mtrs. However, i know a bloke who keeps them in at 1.4m because they were born on the block and if you dont spook them. However, i wouldnt do that at all, as rutting season comes in and youll end up with a feral on your block. The ferals come in to breed and with the horns and testosterone flowing they can kill you and your stock without a problem. The males fight to the death quite often for breeding rights and it isnt pretty. They will destroy your fences to get in so they need to be strong.
Im working through what i want to use based on price and im hoping to do a bit at a time but its a big job.

Certainly find a much better sense of community in rural areas Everyone helps out, lends and borrows things, shares produce etc Much easier to be a prepper

I've thought about this a bit and while everyone may know who you are (which I would argue is wonderful for any SHTF situation) you don't become "that guy"... Most people have guns, large veggie gardens, a large pantry, big water tanks and people who preserve/store food are the norm rather than the exception.
I only have one neighbour within a 2km radius despite the small block as they're all primary production properties. The peace and quiet is just somthing else...
Thanks for sharing your notes on fencing, I unfortunately dont have any wild deer in the area so wouldnt be a problem, that is however a big investment and you'd have to really like venison... A meat I'll confess to never trying.

Thanks for sharing your notes on fencing, I unfortunately dont have any wild deer in the area so wouldnt be a problem, that is however a big investment and you'd have to really like venison... A meat I'll confess to never trying. As i learn with my fencing ill post up mate. In that respect also, i like high fences for a number of other reasons as well. For security purposes. Of course they can be cut, but in general they are a deterrent unless someone is willing to do that. They stops folk driving onto the property or climbing the fences at random to pinch stock or take a look around etc. The other thing is that it stops the roos from getting in and eating my food and trees, bushes etc i put in. It also stops my dogs from getting out and killing stock and or biting people that decide to walk up the road to the house. So deer fencing has a number of benefits which justify the work and cost for preparedness. If you have deer farmers around, and some got out, then you will have wild deer in the area. They will travel phenomenal distances to breed. If you see one with antlers in rut, shoot it! They are dangerous, some will show the whites of their eyes and their eyes are rolling around in their head and theyre snorting etc, floppin crazy amounts of testosterone. That aside, i think im a few hours from you maybe, anytime you want to try venison gimme a yell mate.
