In light of the numerous power blackouts in SA the past few months, former Police Commissioner Gary Burns was asked to prepare a report on the blackouts and the effects on people.
One point that raised a lot of comment was when he said that it was up to us, the citizens, to be better prepared.
Hopefully this thread will provide you with the necessary tools and knowledge to get you through future blackouts.
All comments and questions are welcome.

What has the reaction been to the idea of people being more self-reliant so far? Any media traction, or just buried under Australia Day news?

Mixed reactions - some saying it's a good things to tell people to htfu. It also made the point that the Emergency Services did a damn good job. Once I find the report as a whole I will post it here.

The whole country needs to be more resilient and stop relying on imported goods, especially with regard to fuel and military equipment. Yep. The government had a good couple of years of low oil prices to build up stocks (Australia is well below the oil reserve volume that is supposed to be held as per international obligations), yet instead just sat on their hands and put out excuses like "the consumer would be upset if the prices was raised the 2c/L needed to cover costs". WTF? Prices were the lowest they had been for years, but nothing could be done because there would be a 2c levy? www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-08/australian-oil-reserves-substandard/6377160

Prices were raised so they could pay for bribing the people with dumb costly ideas more.
