I was at the feed store this morning and saw linseed, then tried to remember if someone in here had tried growing it... i was thinking of bce1 's post on Sorghum (I might try sorghum for fun). Have you ever tried growing flax/linseed? I am considering growing an experimental bed of it in our suburban backyard "because it has pretty flowers" ... apparently it likes crappy clay soil and the oil and fibres might make a useful prep

Has been on the list for years and might actually happen this autumn. I bought my wife some carding/felting equipment about 6 months ago and she's been getting into spinning so I've got an excuse now. I usually get my seeds from greenharvest and they list them at $7.95 for 250 grams, I'm guessing they'd be much cheaper sold as fodder, what cost/weight are we talking? greenharvest.com.au/PoultrySupplies/PoultryForageSeed.html^its alphabetical

Any fat/oil is good for preppers as fat's a challenging macro nutrient to get without livestock. Looking at it, it's edible [didn't know that!] and has quite a few useful properties. As with all of this kind of crop [wheat/sorghum etc] I would imagine that it has a low kj/sqm and is a pain to harvest and process but stores pretty well and has useful qualities that probably make it worth while.
