Good on them. I think all democracies should have some level of compulsory civic duty. Makes people not take voting for granted.

While I spent time in the Armed services myself, I don't see the point of conscription unless you can identify a real threat that can be best addressed with man power alone. It is very likely future conflicts will be fought with drones and remotely guided missiles, conscription in comparison is very expensive in time, effort and losses and requires too much logistical support.

No matter what the technology, ground needs to be held or taken with troops. I suspect future threats to Europe will come from within, with civil war as very opposed values give up on talking. The value of geneity not lost in Japan as a contrast.
