There was a guy on faceache offering to drive people from Mackay to rocky before it hit, for a low cost of $1000/seat lol
I didn't get hit very much where I am, but no power for at least another day, lucky I bought a waeco the other week. Spent a fair amount of time today chainsawing fallen trees at my sons school as part of the clean up

Also those ing and moaning on the islands are the people who refused to evacuate ahead of the storm when told to do so, now they are paying the price for staying.

Also those @#$%ing and moaning on the islands are the people who refused to evacuate ahead of the storm when told to do so, now they are paying the price for staying. I saw one woman moaning that she hadn't seen any information about the cyclone before getting up to the reef, and that by the time they got there, it was too late to leave. If someone like me in another country several thousand miles away (and without easy access to google etc websites) could see warnings abouth the storm days in advance, how does someone who is flying up to the likely disaster zone not realise it may not be a good idea? (I'm guessing it won't be long before people start saying they expect a full refund and extra payment for mental anguish caused)

Moaning = not taking personal responsibility for self preservation and sure I'm not going to carry a BOB when I'm holiday. 24hrs without food and you're distraught? [in the article] .. so what, what a terrible attitude to have after such a small thing. Whining is not doing anything about it now is it. I get it, we can all be caught by surprise, sure. Us preppers I would hope are less surprised, I carry some water tabs in my wallet for instance. Though it's what you do about it that matters. Risk of cyclone... hmm.. lets not be here. Go figure. Cyclone hits... ok, things aren't so good, lets look at what we need, water, well there's lots of that, I'll be fine for at least 2 weeks. Do you have shelter? If so, at that point you can go back to having a good time in life and working towards having some food again in a relaxed orderly way. After checking to see if anyone is injured etc, I'd probably go back to enjoying the beach or whatever.

I saw some whinging on one of the islands "I just wanna go home" she said with tears in her eyes. Suck it up buttercup. My first thought was that I would offer to help clear up, you wouldn't get much done but at least make a start on a few critical areas like chainsawing some trees that have fallen over roads. So instead of being a whinging burden make yourself useful, a) you're more likely to be slipped some extra food and water, b) you keep yourself occupied, c) you'll make some new friends, and d) who knows, maybe they'll offer you a discounted holiday or even a job

Providing the winds have abated, whats wrong with stringing up a clean tarp, cutting a small hole in the centre, as the rain collects it goes thru the hole straight into your empty water bottles. Pure rainwater that is fine to drink in huge quantities given the a amount of rain falling at the moment. Or you could blame everyone else for your predicament on social media and go thirsty. We need a good cull anyway. It don't need much eh, any old piece of material like cardboard or this foam and a container. (on a bushwalk a few years ago)

“For visitors, the lack of information is unbelievable,” she told news.com.au. “There’s no communication.
“It’s just the not knowing that’s the hardest part. I know they have a lot to do but they need to get an information place set up. My phone is dead, I’ve got no service, it’s hard. I thought there’d be someone in the street with information and water."
Interesting how quickly people turn to a victim mindset.
“We’ve had no one tell us about food or water, we only know the store is selling stuff which we cannot buy as they’re only accepting cash payment but there’s no way to get money out.”
Absolutely crazy to be so far away from home with no cash... especially given the notice that was given if you weren't buying supplies beforehand.
I've been so many places in Australia that don't take cash during times of stability, to expect business to be able to take digital currency after a cyclone is pure magical thinking.

I made sure I had a few hundred in cash before the storm hit. Still invent got power yet and am about to throw out what's left in the waeco. But looking back on it, besides a generator the only thing I really needed was a lantern, as reading a book and a half of going home with a torch and waving a paper fan is hard to do lol.
At least I know my hot water system also keeps the water inside hot, it's now been 4 days since I lost power and I am still able to enjoy a hot shower.

I'm no longer amazed by the "someone else should've done XXXX for me" mentality. Tragically, it's too common. Bugger me, if I started crying every time something changed, got a little bit tough, or didn't go my own way I'd be a perpetual sook. It's an acceptable attitude for a 3 year old, but not for a grown adult.
It would never occur to me to resort to this attitude, but so many people do. How could our civilization have lost the ability/desire/maturity to fight on through adversity?

Great practice for you JOey! Yes it was a good dry run on things. As I mentioned the above things I've found out personally..
-Hot water system stays hot for days -My Waeco gets 2 solid days on the deep cycle battery I got for it (although not 100% sure it was a top charge now that I found when I took it to a local house with a genny to recharge it, the terminals on the outside of the box had clear plastic sleeve on the brass, so not quite sure when I charged it up the other week if it was actually charging properly lol) -I still didn't touch any of my canned food, found enough other stuff to keep me going without doing much cooking. -Having a virus (cold or otherwise) while all this going on totally sucks balls -It is bloody miserable having to spend 4 days listening to the monotonous droning of the neighbours generator through my bedroom window because they put it in front of their garage not in the backyard, which made the headaches from my cold even worse, many more days and I would have snuck over in the night and poured water in the fuel tank lol -The people in this town are major panic buyers. This is evident at every time we get some decent rain heading for us, coles is quickly depleted of bread, milk and eggs, some people buying 12+ bottles of milk at a time. As of today, all bread, meat, milk and eggs and most bottled water was cleaned out. The day the maccas reopened, the lineup for the drivethru spilled out onto the main streets I got my power back today which was awesome, sweet sweet AC in this 38+ post cyclone tropical climate, but leading up to today, all over the FB community page, was left right and centre total abuse on the poor Ergon blokes trying their best to get the downed lines fixed when there was only 4 blokes in town to do the work, as no other trucks could get through until 6x reinforcement trucks finally got through to town today.

Joey, I hope your neighbours who bought 12+ bottles of milk plus eggs have good generators to run their fridges... otherwise they won't be only ones sour about what happens...

Wow Joey! The generator would be enough to drive me mad. I like to have earplugs stored up for things like this as sleep for me is essential. Buying 12 bottles of milk at a time is pure selfishness as it leaves less for others and there should be some limit imposed on how many you can get. Keeping cool in such heat is also an issue. Recently the Circus was in town and I knew it was going to get really hot in there and being a prepper I came prepared with a bottle of made up Staminade, one of those paper hand fans, and a hankie to wet and put around my neck. Yeah I may have looked ridiculous wafting a fan in front of my face but the lady next to me was quiet happy to have the breeze as well. The wet hankie really did cool me down a little even though I was sweating but the Staminade stopped me from getting any headaches from the heat. I was the only one in the place who had a fan. Those paper fans or even ones made from cloth etc are a great investment and not expensive. You can by cooling mats and neckties that you soak in water and they have something in them that swells and keeps the water in. There are those cooling towels and clothing as well. www.icevests.com.au/
