So the north island of NZ is being battered by cyclone cook. Strong winds and rain with associated flooding and storm surges. It was a category 1 which has rapidly lost steam as hit land but still big for Nz
I know it gets said every time but I am constantly amazed how poorly prepared people are, even for something relatively minor like this. Panic buying and locally power out ( we are off grid 👍 ) and my friends are behaving like it's the end of the world. Sad and amazing to watch at the same time.

For sure BCE it is an amazing thing! Can you imagine a large scale event? Its actually scary how people respond, first just getting through it, then disbelief, then anger "Somebody should be doing something about this!!!", instead of being the someone who does do something about it. We have lost our resilience and fortitude something that generations past probably had in abundance!

I think Remmy and BCE we have become comfortable.... it is easy to do stuff like washing and cooking with the power on... take it away and bam no one knows what to do. One of my work colleagues had to go and "rescue" his daughter and grandkids (flying into townsville and driving to Bowen) as he could not believe the government was telling everyone to boil their water due to contamination. I felt like saying W T F but stopped myself, in NZ they should be used to natural disasters earthqakes etc. so I am a bit shocked to see how unprepared people are

Like cyclone Debbie, there were people out looting DURING the cyclone, that's how quickly the opportunist scum get to work. And most house that has generators running during the day, had them missing by morning to be sold on the black market.

It is sad that folk have become so reliant on the system that they cannot function if the burner on the gas stove doesnt light. For instance, just this weekend i ministered at a conference on preparedness and a whole lot of folk are now getting into it where they werent before. One of the comments that came up was a gentlemen that told me in the flood cut offs i believe, him and his wife had to go to his inlaws to eat, and i asked them if they had run out of food, and he said 'no, we had food but we couldnt cook it', i asked him what food he had to cook, and he said '2 minute noodles, baked beans'. I was a little shocked and said 'why didnt you light a fire in the backyard and take the pot out and boil some water? It was then that i think many other people in the same boat hadnt considered just how easy that really was. So there is a real life example to confirm your comments Jo. Never the less, it was a great weekend and a loooot of new NZ preppers have begun their journey.

Scary isn't it.. sad thing is a lot of these people are "highly educated" but wouldn't think to put a bucket outside if it was raining to collect some rain water for drinking and hygiene needs... they just want a rescue team to turn up with bottled water

I've seen docos on slums in India where there's no running water, intermittent electricity etc, yet the inhabitants are still able to go to work / school with clean pressed clothes, kids having finished their hours of homework every night etc. Meanwhile, in the "first world" you have people complaining on Facebook because they can't power up their phones cos the electricity has been off for a few hours.
