Yes I do think he is showing others that he means what he says he will do. Before he was elected one of his policies was to defeat ISIS. The attack on the Syrian air base was just a chess move he made within 24 hours the Syrians were already flying out from that base again as I dont think there was a lot of damage done to the airstrips. With this one move he sent a strong message and also got some of his previous critics on side. He may have lost some of his former supporters but it is a small price to pay.

I am waiting to see the damage fro the bomb, it does show that Trump will not stand back. It also makes his negotiations with the rouge nations easier and they know he is not bluffing. Yip the russiaphobia and he being called a puppet of Putin, now he rockets them and removes the criticism. Wars should not go on for years and years - if one gets involved in a conflict use everything at your disposal and get it overs as quickly as possible. The problem now is the US is getting drawn into tooooo many conflicts and it is going to end up in WW3.

Trump has apparently removed a lot of the checks and balances from his military brass so they are taking full advantage. Recently they killed over 200 civilians in air strikes on Mosul supporting the Iraqi operation there.
This sort of thing isn't aimed at rogue nations or anything like that. It is about playing to the hawkish segment of the American population who's support Trump relies upon. It's the same as his policy of cutting social welfare, environmental spending and so forth to further bolster military spending. They already spend pretty much more than the rest of the world combined. There is little tangible point. It's basic populist grandstanding.
The downside is that it makes the peace ever more the harder to win in these countries as turns the civilian population against them. Old mate isn't going to be chanting USA USA USA when they just vaporised his entire village.

@pasta deefa I respectfully disagree. The war in Afghanistan has dragged on 16 years and I see this as a decisive move signaling the likely withdrawal of US and coalition troops in the near to mid-term. I don't think Trump wants the military fighting other President's wars.
I discussed this with a friend last night, here in Brisbane, whose partner is one of the 5,000 coalition soldiers currently deployed in Afghanistan. We discussed the MOAB as an attempt to put an end to this never ending conflict (anyone else notice that the primary enemy shifted from being the Taliban to ISIS in this one?).
I oppose the Taliban and ISIS and want our soldiers (coalition and US) brought home as soon as possible. I think the MOAB moves the needle in that direction.

That is an interesting theory. I will be very keen to see if that is the direction it does indeed go.

Apparently the Taliban and ISIS are deadly enemies, so hopefully they will wipe each other out (although Taliban has multiple times the amount of militants as ISIS). Having looked into Afghan history some time ago, I still think that all the foreign militaries should just leave, and let the local forces fight it out. Eventually the Taliban (with help from their Pakistani government friends) will no doubt win again. As long as they aren't supporting terror groups (as they were with Bin Laden in the nineties), then let them run their shithole of a country as they see fit. (Only problem with this is that the Chinese government's influence will increase even more than it already has, which wouldn't be welcomed by the Indians - having another enemy run country nearby).

$170,000USD and 93 ISIS deaths. I abhor those who initiate violence, including some past regimes of US government, ISIS... get exactly what they deserve.
