SO last night about 6pm I was in the kitchen preparing dinner and daughter was in the lounge when a loud bang and tearing noise happened. All the power went out and we were in darkness. We live next door to a restaurant and veggie store and there is a parking area for customers to which the driveway goes past our house. I looked out the kitchen window and saw a delivery truck pulling in to parking. I thought it was going a little fast and was crashing through our gate and into the restaurant next-door. It turns out he had hit the power lines connecting to our house and managed to rip all our power lines out from the fuse box to the power pole. So we are still not connected back up as several different tradies have had to come out to do the job of putting everything back.
Electrician Power company Carpenters and builders Painter to paint the board that was ripped out and splintered
So many people in my yard at the same time. Its taking a while as each person has to wait for another to do what they need to do. Now it looks like hubby has to drive an hour away to get a bracket to fix the power lines securely. Tradies are coming back and forth and I am sitting in the restaurant next door typing this.
Anyway last night we played games by lamplight and listened to music.
Prepare tips from this
1) Games to play we have lots. 2) Keep batteries in an easily to find place something I need to improve on. 3) We were able to boil water on our spirit burner for a cuppa etc. 4) We have a crank and battery operated radio on which is a usb port so we were able to play some music from a USB stick. Also had the radio for entertainment. 5) Create good relationships with neighbours as I have been able to use their internet on one side and power on the other side. have been able to charge our macbook and iPad and phones. 6) We need to work on our alternative power more.

Sorry to hear that Remmy, but hey, on a good note, restaurant and veggie store next door you could prep your take over plan and incorporate the layout and fridges etc into your BOL fort in a zombie apocalypse, be sure to prep the chef for your team lol, nothing like living it up at the end of the world to comfort the soul lol

Its funny you mention the chef, we are on really good terms with him, He is Thai and cooks the best Thai food ever. I have always wondered what he could do with my supply of SPAM.
Now theres an idea SPAM Massaman curry!!

UNO is best if you remove the number cards. That leaves reverse, skip, draw 2, draw 4 and wild. Pointless but fun.

urgghh... scrabble. If the world does end I'll be hiding the scrabble board to be sure. I can handle multiple games of chess at once but scrabble makes my head hurt.
Nothing beats simple playing cards in my opinion. We have plenty of board games and similar but I could play cards all day. I still have 20+ packs of bicycle cards along with plenty of other random decks. I used to collect decks of cards when I played a lot of poker, the stash makes a good prep.
Another thing people rarely talk about is books, too few people keep their own small library these days... its all on e-readers and similar. Real books don't need batteries!
On the music side; Pianos, flutes and guitars don't use batteries either. If there is ever a long term SHTF don't underestimate the ability of music to keep moral up.
Totally agree with building good relationships with the neighbours, you can never have too many friends!

Do recorders count as musical instruments? 😂 we have several of them I have several small axes and hatchets too, i can already imagine the scenario... people running across field with recorders...me in hot pursuit with hatchet above head screaming 'die!' having had enough of it being the end of the world let alone recorders screaming in my ear every day lol. I think im more of a peaceful listen to the sounds of the bush prepper lol

In a SHTF situation I reckon a comb and pice of dunny paper would make the best musical instrument. You could use both items for other stuff.
