While reading through the thread on picking up stuff the clueless / sheeple would avoid, I thought about which places would I avoid altogether in the event of a SHTF / WROL situation, and which safer places could I get the same stuff?
The obvious one in my situation is the supermarket.
I have two decent sized supermarkets within a km or so of my place; one in a row of shops and other on the second floor of the local shopping mall. Keeping in mind the size of doors, stairs have to go up to get in etc, neither is particularly easily accessible now, let alone in a grid-down situation where I would be competing for resouces.
The alternative? The myriad of small convenience stores, corner shops and small restaurants (~5 tables) that abound around our place. While these may be more likely to be protected by their owners, I reckon they would nevertheless provide a better array of easily obtained staples like bottled water, rice, batteries etc that would at least initially be overlooked while people rushed to the big stores.
So, which other places would you be avoiding?

I'd avoid any places that sell stuff to the public, these are the first places the hordes will flock to as they are familiar and its all most know.
As you say small businesses may be protected by the owners in SHTF events, at first anyway.
For other places to source supplies, schools would be one. They have canteens and a decent supply of food etc. Same for larger work sites or industries they usually have a work place canteen.

I'd avoid fruit orchards, market gardens, etc. I know too many unprepared folks who think they have the unique idea of camping out in such places to survive for extended periods.

The places I would avoid are the following
Anything deemed important to the government............... and that pretty much covers it no really anything deemed important by the government will be a very bad place to go near for several reasons 1.it will be protected by people with better toys then the average person has 2. it will be inundated by other people seeking help or supplies 3. It is a logical target for attacks and raid by hostile parties both state and non state actors
Now to use a very mundane example your local high school sure it has a few valuable supplies especially if you know what your looking for "cough ,cough science lab " however pretty much every darn school is an evacuation centre or a field command station in emergencies think about it nice big field to land helicopter's in or to deploy other equipment like field hospitals and aid stations or emergency shelter tent or even to house troops and not to enation the actual infrastructure that's in place as well so on that side of things schools will either be filled with guys with heavy weapons or lots of hungry desperate people looking for the promised land and because of that its best to just stay away from them
Oh I know the local port plenty of supplies and water access yeah pas on that too as you can very much rest assured there will be the remnants of government agents there as ports are a vital logistical asset needed to either rebuild , evacuate or neutralise a threat you can only move so much via air transport and you need to get heavy equipment in to repair airfields somehow
its very important to always remember that any building or facility that belongs to the local council , state government or federal government can be commandeered by emergency service , federal agents or the military in times of crisis so that local school with the juicy supplies could now be a F.O.B with ADF deployed there to conduct patrols to maintain order and you going there would possibly be very bad for you
so my point is think about what is around you and ask these questions Is it vital to the government to help restore order and maintain control? Would the average person go there in a time of crisis? Is it advertised as a safe place for natural disasters like bush fires?
if the answer is yes for any of those questions then advance with caution and do some detailed recon that involves days of monitoring to ensure you have the best possible picture
well that's the way I see it anyway I could be totally wrong and just a twit

Avoid retail. Investigate wholesale/distribution.

Come to think of it, I'd be keeping off the roads as much as possible. Given the dickheads normally on the roads, WTSHTF it can only get worse...

Avoid the supermarkets - there will be raiders.
Avoid the main roads - usually a good place for an ambush.
Avoid caves near water - there's usually mirelurks or super mutants in them...
My advice? Stay inside the vault...

To get to the spot you have to walk in to it. There is a waterhole and you have to climb to the cave (to the left in pic) above. So you would be able to see anyone coming along the trail. We would have to drive there first and then walk in. The cave has a wide mouth but also extends backwards far enough and you can stand up in it. Attachments:

What might seem safe from one angle on one day, could turn out to be dangerous by the time you need it!
Scope your BoLs out regularly, things can change.

Avoid anywhere where people might be that aren't in your group. Avoid major roads as much as possibly and practical, always have a way out, or vehicle that is capable of going bush fast and hard!
If you need to go to the shops for food or needy supplies for 6 months, you weren't prepped enough, either skill or supplies.

Avoid retail. Investigate wholesale/distribution. Yep, the only retail store I would conceivably visit would be the local big-box sports store (although would want a couple of people with me as backup). I've already bought a lot of stuff from this place, but there is still a huge amount of gear that would come in very handy in a SHTF situation - all sorts of camping / trekking / fishing / archery gear, baseball bats, all sorts of torches and lanterns, binoculars etc. About the only thing that their missing is knives, which are pretty much restricted to underground online sales since the government restricted sales a couple of years ago.

It sounds to me by reading most, if not all the previous posts in this thread that most, if not all of you are not suitably prepared for a SHTF situation regardless of how long it was to last.

It sounds to me by reading most, if not all the previous posts in this thread that most, if not all of you are not suitably prepared for a SHTF situation regardless of how long it was to last. No-one is suitably prepared ever, as we do not know what situation might arise in our neck of the woods. Do you have all of your electronic gear in a faraday cage if a solar flare blows everything up for instance? Do you have an endless supply of food that will absolutely take care of you to survive and thrive a nuclear blast and its radiation residue for years to come? Do you have an endless supply of ammo to deal with millions of people that might find out about you and attack you? Again, nobody is absolutely prepared. The other aspect is, that many of us are limited in our abilities for how much money we have and or if we are currently renting. So prepping is an ongoing thing. Do you own your house and land etc outright or are you still paying for a mortgage? What happens if the economy collapses. Do you have an underground living area that cannot be found on the property you own, for you to survive in if the Crown decide to seize your property? Ill be the first to admit im not prepped enough, and tbh i dont know if i will ever be. I do have on the foot skills for hunting, trapping and growing food etc. Im strong and very determined and wouldnt think twice to defend my family and or friends if a without rule of law situation ever occured and we were under attack, but i can always do with more skill and learning...in every area.

Ignore Peter1942 he comes on here every so often, tells us we are not prepared and then leaves for a while. Says pretty much the same thing each time.
