Just to clarify, I'm not a total woos; this board is to discuss some of the very basics we all think we know...

I have a light cut on my finger, which is going puffy and tender. How should I treat it? Oh noes!
I'm going to show my distinct lack of first aid knowledge here...
If it were me I'd burn a needle to 'sterilise it', poke it... try to get any of the puffiness out... I'd then use savlon and hope?
Looking forward to someone telling me what the actual answer is...

Yes, this happened (woe is me), so I poured some vodka on it. The stinging hurt less than the loss of alcohol

I have a light cut on my finger, which is going puffy and tender. How should I treat it? This is what I do - but my medical training is very elementary. Red puffy and tender is most likely an infection or a splinter/dirt in the wound. I use Betadine / Iodine Swabs or a betadine antiseptic ointment to clean the area regularly. I also use a drawing ointment did a search for Australian products found something called ICHTHAMMOL OINTMENT.. Or just nuke it with surgical spirits.

I'd wash it in disinfectant then do one of two things.
1) If I thought there could be a small hidden splinter or similar, I would make a bicarbonate paste and put that on it, cover with a bandaid or similar, and leave about 24 hr.
2) If I thought it was more of an infection that needed to come to a head I'd soak it in warm water (soapy or with dettol or lavender essential oil) for 10-20 min x 2 or more times a day. If it then had an obvious pus build up I'd do the burnt needle to pop it, then plenty of disinfectant and cover it.
Hopefully these actions would solve the problem.
If it got more painful as days passed I would like to be treating with antibiotics but if that wasn't possible I'd be using natural remedies that are antibacterial and I'd prob increase my vit c (either through tablet or food).

Red and puffy can also just mean it's inflammation and is trying to heal itself. The tenderness could also be from the actual cut itself or from infection. Depending on how you cut it, I'd wash with an antiseptic soap (or vodka pat dry with some clean tissue and depending on size wrap in some clean cloth or bandaids. This is just what I would be doing for a minor cut.

FYI it's still puffy and tender, but I did squeeze a good bit of pus out today which helped. Dettol was tonight's rinse of choice...

spit on it and forget about it!
just kidding.
most cuts i get heal without any attention, and i get a lot! some pretty deep too. i clean them out with water usually, squeeze them out, and bandaid. i must get a steel left hand glove for when i harvest animals, im quick and can be careless and with shaving sharp knives it sucks.
once i bled all the way back to a car, had to take off my flannel and wrap my hand up to stop the bleeding......never hastily throw a knife into a fishing bucket and then forget it and try to push a bag into the bucket...darn thing almost punched through my palm to the other side.
another time i woke up covered in blood, blood all around me too, 2.5hours of microsurgery kinda fixed that up, thumb works now. but the most wicked cut ive had was a tiny cut from a sheet of aluminium which was infected and kept me up for days throbbing.
i like scars, i just hate getting them, get well soon pete!

Um, you do realise this is barely more than a scratch, but an interesting discussion point, yes?
Although in years past I have seen my own bones more than I probably should have...

Stuff that! ive never seen my bones but ive snapped a few badly, but didnt push through the flesh thankfully. Yer mate, as i said, the worst cut that i had was a small cut that got infected, probably same as youve got, shocking torture of continual pain.

I've never actually broken one of my own bones (although in sparring I had my rib cracked, and in real situations I've broken the bones of others. But they're accounts for other times...).
I once cut my finger down to the bone - and at the time I worked as a concert pianist and piano accompanist which made things very interesting - and I also once banged my shin into a brick retaining wall. It's quite surprising how white the shin bone is once cleaned of blood and sinew.
I also lay claim as to the only person I personally know who has ever seen his own skull. That wasn't a good day...

Yeah I think we'd better stay on Pete's good side eh? If I haven't burned/cut/splintered/abraded myself on any given day I didn't get out of bed, cuts are not usually very deep but I always to some damage during the day, I must be just a klutz. Anyway I never do anything really, if necessary I apply pressure with some dunny paper and/or hold the affected hand up while trying to continue what I was doing with the other. Five minute later the bleeding has stopped and I carry on. As a kid I did cut the back of three fingers very deeply after being told not to play with a Stanley knife. I put sticky tape on them and tried to hide the problem but got busted

Working around the farm I've always got cuts and splinters and don't think much of it A minor cut last year got infected and ended up on Iv antibiotics Was amazed how quick it spread up the arm So now every cut gets a wash and antiseptic And wear gloves much more In shtf even a minor infection can be fatal

If it is red and oozing puss, I like to rinse it with Hydrogen Peroxide - maybe poke at it with sterile tweezers as well while the bubbles are doing their job.
If it isn't bleeding I'd say let it breathe and keep it uncovered. If it is oozing or bleeding go for a bandaid with a drop of triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin (cuts heal really well and much quicker, but you run the risk of developing antibiotic resistant organisms - I just don't care)

What I got from this post. - wash/disinfect minor wounds to stop possible death, particularly post SHTF - Peter doesn't care about Vodka spillage.

In a 'supply scarce' situation one can soak an infected cut in Tomato juice/pulp and then apply a little lemon juice after rinsing off. Anyone who's ever made de-skinned large amounts of tomatoes when making sauce might have noticed how extraordinarily clean their hands are after they are rinsed off - I'm talking 'chemical peel' clean. I think I read somewhere tomato juice has enzymes in it that dissolve dead skin. So tomato juice/pulp dissolves anything necrotic in the wound and lemon juice kills germs.
