Making your own solar water heater is a great way to save some money on your electricity bill with the help of the sun. It’s an easy and efficient way for anybody to create their own water heater using simple materials that can be found in most stores. With the endless possibilities of designs and ideas for the solar heater, I will show three different ways you can make it out of (mostly) used materials. I built a water heater out of PVC piping, a radiator, and an old boiler (which will be connected to the pipe system to hold more water and keep it warm)................................................................... www.askaprepper.com/make-solar-water-heater/

Hi Just thought I would add my two bobs worth, building a solar water heater is a great idea, and I have done it from scratch even building the stainless steel storage water tank and it worked extremely well keeping a family of seven in hot water for showers, baths, washing, dishes no problem at all at a Melbourne longitude. However in my latter years living in a unit on my own I have a cheaper alternative that solves the freezing issues too....PV solar is now so cheap that used with a storage hot water system works out to be a cheaper option than any commercial solar hot water unit, if you do not have time to build your own.
If you do build your own storage hot water tank the secret to making them work well is to make it over sized and well insulated storage tank. You should, consider running largish pipes into to it so the water contents do not mix up as water flows in and out of the tank, even consider baffles to assist stratification of the hot water to the top of the tank. Remember when heat applied to the bottom of a storage hot water tank, say from an element etc it is going to mix the contents and that can lower the temperature of the discharge line.
