There are also all sorts of additional issues that rising from the events. like Sewerage works and chem factories that spilled into the streets creating potential contaminated areas, mosquito plagues, a dam failing in Puerto Rico that now requires 70,000 to evacuate - where do they go.... Post a global SHTF event there will be no aeroplanes spraying mosquitoes, and I doubt that the islands have that luxury. MOSQUITOES PLAGUE THOSE WORKING TO RECOVER FROM HARVEYwww.texasstandard.org/stories/mosquitoes-plague-those-working-to-recover-from-harvey/They swarm people working to repair utilities, homeowners trying to clean up their property – anyone trying to work outdoors. ... “You know if thousands and thousands of mosquitoes swarming around, that’s going to hamper those efforts, people aren’t going to want to be outside,” Van Deusen says. Late last week, the Texas Department of State Health Services announced an aerial mosquito control initiative. They’ve enlisted help from FEMA and contracted with pest control companies to begin spraying for the pests. There are also 3 active volcanoes roaring to life at the moment in Bali, Mexico and Vanuatu. It looks like Bali and Vanuatu have their evacuations under control, however the Mexicans must be wondering who has cursed them after the recent hurricanes and earthquakes now followed by this.

It is always great to hear everyone's ideas on possible events of concern, mostly because I fear the one I don't see coming the most. The list seems a bit light no to me as I count North Korea as fairly serious, then we have supervolcano's like Yellowstone, Long Valley Caldera, Valles Caldera, Lake Toba, Taupo Caldera and Aira Caldera. Next on my list is Fukushima, that has not one but three nuclear reactors in china syndrome melt down and has set new records in radioactive contamination.
Closer to home and of more immediate concern for me is the power grid, I'm not worried about me personally not having electricity, but no body seems to realize just how society and the power grid have a symbiotic relationship, if one goes down the other will too especially seeing how the internet has made things so much more reliant upon electricity for everything!

Yeah the loss of the grid would have no direct effect on me at all, but of course the ensuing chaos would.

Yeah the loss of the grid would have no direct effect on me at all, but of course the ensuing chaos would. Biggest things with extended black-outs are fuel supply and communications systems failing. We had a 3.5 day black-out in my area about this time last year. Everyone stayed calm and collected even though by day 2 we were hearing it could be a couple of weeks before 'normal' power restored. Lots of folks with gen sets found themselves out of fuel and unable to get more from servos. Happily, I had plenty on hand and was able to give some to family and friends. Wood fired hot water in 80 litre batches was a real bonus as well ...
