Hmmmmm ... possibly the authors of the White Paper are on drugs. No-one on gods green earth would put their hand up to be allies with a dysfunctional India. South Korea can barely manage it's own neighbor. Neither of those seem like viable 'allies'. We'd have to think hard about being close allies with Japan too ... the Chinese have an axe to grind with them. Perhaps it's wise to hitch our wagon to the rising Chinese giant rather than the Empire of the Setting Sun (USA)?
Exactly who are we worried about doing us harm anyway? And what kind of harm? Depending on what one sees as the answer to those questions; our current best ally is quite possibly also one of our our worst 'enemies'.
The US needs Pine Gap. It's ranked in the top 5 most important military installations in the western world. I'm fairly confident we can rely on them militarily. Pity they mess us around on trade and foreign policy so much.
