A vacuum sealer is a great tool for prepping. If you make your own jerky, dehydrate fruit or buy goods in bulk then break them down into portion sizes, being able to store them in safe, sealed packaging is a real advantage. What else is a vacuum sealer good for, though? Have you ever found yourself holding a vacuum bag and giving something a speculative look? If so, that’s fine; a vacuum sealer, combined with some creativity, can become an extremely powerful prepping tool. It can do a lot more than just store portions of food. ..... www.askaprepper.com/7-unusual-ways-use-vacuum-sealer/

Some great ideas there. I particularly like the dehydrated meals as a lightweight MRE replacement.
One question though - why is it a bad idea to store loaded magazines (the article suggests leaving ammunition out of the magazine)?

One question though - why is it a bad idea to store loaded magazines (the article suggests leaving ammunition out of the magazine)? That is a good question - I did some searchings and there are pros and cons for both arguments. I'd strongly suggest that complying with your current State laws on ammunition storage is the better option. That should allow you to work out whether to store in or out of a magazine.

aside from our draconian firearm laws, the reason I would see the recommendation for long term storing ammo out of the magazine could be a couple of things.. -reaction of the different metals causing corrosion -with the mag spring compressed for a long time would weaken the spring so you would have feeding issues down the track, especially with the last few bullets in the mag Those are 2 that pop into my head atm.
Has anyone done any research into how long you can extend the shelf life of 2min noodles if sealed in a vac bag? I would love to get my hands on some of the vac sealable mylar bags for good and proper food storage, but they can only be bought from the US for a much higher price then plain mylar bags :,(
Note to self, start storing emergency foods. Also buy new steel cupboard next time I go to Bunnings for food storage so the missus doesn't and moan about all the cans of baked beans and soup in the cupboard lol
