Through a round about path I ended up having a chat with a German survivalist. Upper middle classs guy from the north of the country. Very interesting conversation about his survival strategy - and the rise of German nationalism but that’s a seperate thread!! He is acutely aware of the population density and all that entails. He has converted his basement to a shelter with a very hidden entry - decked it out with food / water / sewerage / light and plans to literally go underground for 6-9 months to allow the population to thin - his view was that it simply isn’t possible to survive a collapse with that many people out in the open and there is no where to hide. He even has a contingency plan of burning his house down over his shelter if the local situation was especially dire as a means of camouflage and has built his shelter accordingly. I don’t think we truly appreciate in the antipodes the risk of the shear volume of people in Europe. You want get a population collapse in a population dense area without a lot of noise. Not sure I could do long term shelter living, but interesting chat.

We live in the lucky country. Only place I can think of that might be better is NZ. NZ’s fresh water resources and precipitation rate (coupled with low population density) make it more suitable for long term survival in my book. Ross Elder’s ‘Scavenger’ trilogy explores the reality of bunker living - decent read.

That's an extreme plan he has there bce. At least he's got a realistic expectation and plan to deal with it. Over population is becoming the serious global undertow at the moment with the population here in aus expected to reach 48M by 2040. Our current food resources can't cope with this, as all cities and towns will have taken over any decent farming ground by that time and will only leave very arid areas in the desert left for food production. But by that time the government would have probably outlawed farming and rely totally on imported food products to feed us. The world is in desperate need of a reduction in people, but at least 1-2 billion to bring the levels back down to manageable levels. Without sounding like a narcissist by saying, it is a very real problem. With certain religious groups reproducing faster then rabbits and out populating the native peoples of the countries they move to, its not helping one bit. Good on old mate for keeping it real.

The ramifications of unsustainable population growth are having a serious impact including countries once regarded as being "remote" and underpopulated such as Oz. The serious effects are upon us right now and increasing exponentially way beyond even the most concerned, pessimistic observer's projections.

I don't understand what makes anyone think Australia would be spared any of the pain just because we might have a slightly lower population density. Once the shops stop supplying goods you have about three days before people can justify just about anything in order to feed their children/family/cat/dog or whatever! They will stop at nothing if they think they know where food is, so don't fool yourselves your house will not be looted and or members of your family killed if they stand in the way.
I have considered the above situation very carefully and the only thing that works is like the German guy is doing to make people think there is nothing there, drop off the radar totally! As for guns and defending yourself, unless you have a silencer fitted, that only tells me you have not really thought it through properly!
