One of the reasons I want to be out of China before 2020 is that current thinking is Xi Jinping will try to take Taiwan in either 2020 or 2021. He is now in his second term as president, and acccording to the Chinese constitution should be stepping down in 2022, but practically everyone with a bit of sense can see he plans on doing a Putin and staying in charge as long as he can. He's also set the military a deadline of early 2020 to modernise and built up a blue water navy (the second aircraft carrier will be doing sea trials this year), as well as get all the missile systems fully tested and integrated, build up the offshore islands, making sure all buildings have underground bunkers, arcing up the anti-foreign propaganda etc. That's just China. Who knows what happens if the Indos get a hardline Islamist leader who decides to make Australia pay for all the "injustices" meted out over the years (ie. Australian interference in Timor, boat people being sent back to Indo etc)?

Interesting indeed SA Hunter. And it raises the question WHY is Australian political and military leadership still messing around procuring conventional subs and conventional weapons that are utterly pointless for genuine national defence capability?
If Barries views in this article were to be regarded as approximately correct ... we need to follow the NK / pakistan path and go nuclear on subs and their weapons systems. And make it crystal clear that ground invasion of the Australian continent will result in mass destruction on the homeland for any aggressor.
The doctrine also requires the explicit DFWM and IWFWY message and actions to be clearly displayed: keeping our military hardware away from their borders, a neutral stance and open dialogue on military and trade issues and letting potential aggressors know we have nuclear armed subs out in the blue water of the pacific and indian oceans to call on as required and we are prepared to have our own cities razed rather than submit meekly.
Probably in the next big war the US may treat us as they did Great Britain in 1940-41. Hang us out as a punching bag for the adversary to dispense their early attacking vigor on before actually stepping into the ring? Perhaps being unable to decisively defeat a large foreign invader the US would agree to yet another of their North-South - split the country, solutions? The resource rich WA, NT and Qld get handed over and we get to keep NSW, SA, Vic and Tas?
