Power blackouts for up to a week is my primary prep concern since I live in a cyclone/supercell alley zone and when the power goes out, it's down for at least a week. I've just got 1 more prep to go in regards to my infrastructure for this and that's a genny crossover switch in the mains box, but I'm holding off on that as I'm in a rental atm and don't know how much longer we will be staying in this house, I guess that depends if they try and hike the rent come the next renewal in a couple of months.

In Australia today many Woolworths supermarkets closed suddenly because an IT issue shut down all the checkouts. The news story was full of people complaining they had no food for dinner. Lots of folks are going to get caught "with their pantries down" when the SHTF. As long as we have mason jars filled with rice, beans, and cornmeal, and a water supply, the BHC and I won't worry.

From the original article
"We know that accurate estimates for power and/or hot water being restored has been a significant source of customer frustration"
Do they have communal hot water or something?

A parent talking about his kids' difficulties with no power from one of the articles above: "There was some battery left on the iPad so they could watch something on that. But the eldest is suffering...he can't watch the telly, he can't play Xbox, he can't play on the iPad, he can't do anything. He's been in tears a couple of times."
Is their house empty of books, board games, playing cards and other non-electronic entertainment? (I can imagine what the kids will be like in a few years time, walking around glued to their phones 24/7)

Cleaning their rooms? Helping with younger siblings? Or Frostbite's suggestions above? I think it's summed up by the comment that "he can't do anything". Obviously useless to himself and others.

How about chores - mowing the lawn, washing the car, stacking firewood, like all the stuff I did growing up?

"I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots."
Wasn't Einstein who said this, but whoever it was, was pretty switched on.
And what baffles me the most is that people live through a few of these minor inconveniences, and they still do nothing!!! Seriously?? You haven't learnt your lesson, and still have nothing to eat or drink??
Fair Dinkum, is the gene pool really drying up that quickly?

But the rains will come and wash it clean.
