I just finished reading An Ordinary Epidemic by Amanda Hickie, and would recommend it for something completely different in prepper fiction.
I have read quite a lot of prepper fiction and it mostly seems to follow a fairly predictable pattern. This book doesn’t do that. It was a nice change for me, but if you just like all the action in those books you may not enjoy this one.
I’ve been wanting something set in Australia for a while, as I do think there are some big differences in how things would play out here. I just came across this book by accident when I was browsing the discounted shelves at a bookstore. The story is set in Sydney, with mention also of Newcastle and Canberra. It is told from the perspective of the wife/mother.
The scenario is an epidemic and the events of the book span a period of only a couple of months. While there are lots of deaths from the disease, there is very little violence, and almost no mention of guns.
I liked that there were quite a few points in the book that had me wondering what could have been done differently, and also thinking in a concrete way about what I am lacking to deal with a similar scenario.
The family in the story hunkers down quite early - keeping kids out of school when most were still going, so that is another thing I have been left to ponder: how early in a situation of spreading disease would I insist on our household staying inside? Would I tell myself I was being over cautious, or would I be ok with going against what others are doing? What would it take for me to insist on isolation - one case in the region I live in?, 10 cases?, deaths nearby?
Anyway, if you are looking for a very different book to most prepper fiction, but that deals with a topic that many preppers are concerned with, you may enjoy this one. I noticed it is also available on kindle.

Sounds good. Will check it out. Another quite different PA novel is Earth Abides by George Stewart. Tackles a lot of pertinent non-violence related topics, especially around social organisation. Hard to believe it was written in 1949. Seems more like something much more recent. www.goodreads.com/book/show/93269.Earth_Abides
