We were up North when cyclone Yasie came through! Yup we were sheep back then had no idea what to expect but we did do emergency boxes and tapped up windows ( it was really hard finding tape). Secured the yard etc. I stayed awake until 2 in the morning listening to the wind sound like a train rushing through. That wasn't the worst of it though I fell asleep and slept through the worst part. Woke up at six to a huge jacaranda that had split on half down in our yard. Miracle though, it missed us , missed the neighbours at back and missed our shed. It fell right down between the shed and washing line. No damage but plenty of firewood for later. Haha. All the kids slept right through the whole thing. We were up on the Atherton tablelands so it had reduced to category 3 by then.

Cyclone are pretty scary the first time you go through them. They should hunker down in the strongest room in the house and take a couple of mattresses in if they have to cover themselves.

Sh_t - just came in for the 09:00 BOM track update and looked at the neighbours yard - we run the risk of being taken out by all the 'STUFF' sitting around their yard and verandah!!! The sad fact is - they were born and raised up here in the north - there are some teenage boys living at home who are pretty slack by the looks of things. Or This is a classic example of complacency.
There will be one made rush soon around Cairns and Townsville once people realise this IS going to hug the coast(this is one occasion I will be pleased to be told I am wrong)!!!

I have already got her to set up that room, all the mattresses, got her to put documents, pantry food and some clothes in watertight containers, also got her to grab a deck of cards or anything else that might "distract' them. She has the cars full of petrol and some things in the cars also (garaged)so all I can do now is hope it changes directions.
Good luck and stay safe Sentinel, hope your neighbours do a good clean up before it's too late, also hoping for all it does not want to linger on that coastline for too long.

I think I've heard just about all of those in my area at one point or another. The small house thing really is an issue I moved into a very small house after my divorce this year Less than 1000 sq ft and a total of five rooms I've had to readjust my thinking but it can be done. I mourn the loss of a full basement more than anything, and not just for prep-related stuff. The current house only has a utility crawl space and apparently ( I haven't been here long enough to see it ) flooding is not unheard of despite sump pumps. Storage in an unheated detached garage is possible, but I loathe to store barrels of water, food items etc out there. I wasn't into prepping back in my pre-marital apartment days. Everything I owned back then fit into a single trip by a moving van. My ex is still sending me stuff of mine 8 months after I moved out. It's amazing how much "stuff" you acquire in a 20 year marriage....
