My daughter and her hubby are currently cycling around Europe on a Tandem bike. This is their first Youtube Video of their trip and I wanted to share it as it is a good example of how little gear you need. Although they are not in a SHTF situation so food and water is not so hard to come by the gear they have is interesting!

Good fun cycling around Europe. I have considered cycling touring using a small bicycle trailer, which I think will make things a bit easier.
Not having to worry about security and food gathering one does not need excessive equipment. The earlier explorers did not carry much equipment

Good setup. In a SHTF situation, you would only need to add some more water storage and a filter, another bag or pack to hold more food and firearms and ammo as needed

Excellent. I'm a bit envious of their adventure. Raises the obvious question: why a tandem? Why not two standard bikes which (I assume) are easier to ride?

Why wouldn't you go tandem, just make sure your the rear person so you can have a rest.

ONe reason is that my daughter has rheumatoid arthritis, this helps to take a bit of the burden off her, its also fun and they won't lose each other lol!

Oh great to hear frostbite, my daughter is not medicated unless its for pain. She is on a vegan diet as we worked out that animal protein causes her a lot of pain. This is due to the bacteria that are causing her arthritis feeds off animal proteins. If she has any animal protein she flares up and is in pain. There is a form of arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis which affects the spinal column and from what I have read it is caused by a bacteria lodged there that feeds on starches, so low starch diets can help these people. I researched some medical publications and figured out that it was possible that it was a bacteria feeding on animal proteins causing my daughters issue. The bacteria in her case is the same that can cause UTIs, from which she suffers a fair bit.

Anyone know if apple cider vinegar helps with arthritis?
We grow a lot of chillies, haven't had a huge use for them but maybe I'll give this a try.

Many, many years ago (so I could no longer tell you the reference) I read that after a meat meal your blood is thicker which can also impact things like arthritis. The source that I read it from was a doctor who said that it is easily seen if you take a blood test after a meal - comparing taking blood when someone has just had a meat meal compared with someone who has just had a veg meal. I know there are people here with medical background who may be able to verify if this is true, but it is what I read. Would have implications for other health concerns (stroke/heart attack/etc) too.

I have medical background, but I know with cholesterol testing, if one eats greasy/fatty meat it shows almost immediately in your blood test. That is why a fasting test is required.

Sister in law worked at a pathology lab for several years. She said you could visually see the fat in some peoples blood samples. Whilst not vegetarian, she has chosen to eat minimal animal based foods as a result of seeing that. Whenever I eat animal foods I take the 'precaution' of drinking an appropriate amount of red wine to dissolve the fat off my artery walls.

Blood tests for fats in your blood are now so advanced that they can break the profile down into several subtypes.
These are the groups when I had mine done a while back I was lucky to fall into the type A profile.
Cholesterol Trigclycerides HDL LDL Chol/HDL ratio LDL/HDL ratio Trig/HDL ratio Very low density Lipoprotein (VLDL) Intermediate density Lipoprotein (IDL-1) Intermediate density Lipoprotein (IDL-2) Intermediate density Lipoprotein (IDL-3) Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-1) Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-2) Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-3) Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-4) Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-5) Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-6) Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-7)
Depending on the breakdown you can fall into either Type A(normal) or Type B
Type A
Deemed a normal profile Predominance of large/buoyant (less arthorogenic) LDL subclasses (LDL 1 and 2) Mean particle size of >263 Angstrom (A) Elevated Cholesterol, normal Triglycerides, Elevated Apo B
Type B
Deemed an abnormal profile Predominance of small/dense (more arthrogenic) LDL subclasses (LDL3 4 5 6 7) Mean Particle Size of <258 Angstrom (A) Raised Cholesterol, raised Triclycerides, raised VLDL, low HDLC This profile is the designated atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype consistent with an increased risk of CAD and is also Diabetes type 2
So saying you have high cholesterol is not really a good measure of ill health. You need to take into account the ratio of the different fats in your body. So even if you can see the fat in your blood right after a meat meal does not indicate how your body is breaking the fat down.
