Ok AusPrep brains trust, sorry if this has been asked and answered - Im sneaking on here at work and cant take the time to do an in depth search atm (Bad Tan!)
Next project at Casa de Tan is a backup battery bank (with a view to adding solar/wind/whatever later).
What is a fair price for a 2nd hand deep cycle battery in your experience?
Doing precursory searches in the usual places (FB marketplace/Gumtree etc) and realised I have no idea what price I should be willing to pay....
Im happy to buy off Ebay etc, but again, I need to know what a fair price for 2nd hand is....anyone want to venture suggestions?

Hmmm ... I know nothing about batteries. But I wonder Would anyone be selling good ones second hand? Strikes me as something best bought new?

use a multimeter to test the battery against its rated voltage when the battery is fully charged. if its significantly lower it is nearing its end of life or damaged. remember your battery bank is only as good as its weakest link (battery).
2nd hand might be ok if your not concerned about reliability, significant work load and maintenance.
there is a wide range of battery sizes from car batteries to ones that weigh hundreds of kgs. What are you looking for?

I just bought 16 new batteries for about $245 each (Century C105, 225Ah, 6v), rightly or wrongly I have been advised to never buy 2nd hand and let's just say if I sold my old ones on eBay they would look good, but they ain't.
That said, ex-telco standby batteries might be OK as they never really get discharged.
