I stopped reading at "To calculate the date for Earth Overshoot Day, it crunched United Nations data"...
Not what I'd call a reliable source...

Yep, my first thought was - damn, I've drunk my quota of JD & Beer for the next 15 yrs, oh well, bring on years 16+. It is interesting though these articles, how they seem to try to mould people's thoughts and lifestyle to abide by their agenda - this will be a great $$$ spin off for those in the "clean, renewable energy & food source sectors".

I stopped reading at "To calculate the date for Earth Overshoot Day, it crunched United Nations data"... Not what I'd call a reliable source... Not to mention the bullshit part where livestock production contributes to 15% of greenhouse gas emissions 😣 and the lack of mention of our disposable consumerist society. It's no coincidence that in the 1960's we were breaking even, now we are using more and more resources each year. ....could it be because so much stuff we buy is disposable? Even appliances that take a lot of resources and processing to create don't last more than 2 years and can't be fixed. Yeah I think the world is way overpopulated but I think it would be far more sustainable if our lifestyle changed.

Yep. Nailed it Feralemma. We are all part of the 'Landfill Economy'. The entire economic system and way of life we know is dedicated to exploiting resources at the maximum possible rate and converting it into waste heat and Land fill. It just happens to briefly pass through our households along the way. Even so called 'recycling' is a massive con.
We have the knowledge and tech to be able to build most things to last for many decades ... and yet ... product lifespan and quality is declining. My parents had a fridge that ran without fault for 38 years. These days 10 years is considered a good run. I bet plenty fail before that. Same with electric kettles ... they had one 40 years old. Just replaced a small element in it once every 7 or 8 years. Try that with a 'modern' kettle!
Fun fact: The functioning of the Internet now accounts for a little over 10% of total world energy consumption. And it's only getting bigger.
Our species has (largely) failed the test of 'intelligent' life. Bring on the Asteroid.

...product lifespan and quality is declining. I can't help but think of attention spans also decreasing as I read this...

Um ... What? Yes I agree the iPhone 10 is soooooooooooo much better than the 9. The Camera on it is amazing! Yeah ... and those pesky Russians voting Donald Trump in! Have you heard Serena Williams lost a Tennis match for the first time in ages? Sugar is Evil. How the hell can we ever be expected to cope with paying 15 cents for a shopping bag? If we don't stop these diabolical plastic straws it'll be the end of us. Who got voted out of Survivor? Who got voted out of The Bachelor? What are they saying on Gogglebox? Who got voted out of Masterchef? Who won the Footy?

Alternatively: "farmers are evil/greedy/cruel/overclearing/destroying the planet but eating a totally plant based diet has zero environmental footprint and the huge house I live in and all the technology I use does not contribute to the worlds problems AT ALL" Definitely also posted using the latest you beut upgraded phablet.

PETA came out this week and blasted the farmers - saying if they can't feed their animals during a drought, then stop breeding them!! This logic is, well, nothing I can say without having to warn/ban myself.

Members of PETA don't have a brain cell to share between them!
