90km north of my place. The green paddock is what it should be looking like! The other two are how plenty of patches are looking at the moment. Click to enlarge to get the full effect.

Damn. If it's that dry this time of year it doesn't bode well for summer.
I was just thinking about dry parts of Australia today; we've had massive rainfall here to the point where it's been causing some damage. This truly is a country of extremes...

Shit to hear Spinifex. Was hoping the last couple of batches of rain was hit across that way.
Seasons have been running a bit longer the past year I think. Hope it turns around with the last of the wet season.
Hows things where you are Spinifex?

I'm 90km from those pics and we are green. Crops are much less mature than 'normal' for the time of year here, and what we live in fear of is an early cut-off to spring rain. At least where we are there is feed to keep stock going. Even if we get little or no rain going forward there is enough moisture in the soil to give enough crop bulk to cut hay.
In those sand drift areas pictured some folks will try and plant a cover crop just to stop the sand moving. It's dicey though ... could make it worse if they don't get a bit more rain up there.
I've also heard via a grain trading consultant that the planet currently only has 30% of annual grain requirement coming thru the global production system. Given poor seasons all over the planet we could be about to see a global grain deficit of major economic significance. Bread may get a little more costly but the real hit will affect intensive livestock industries. Meat might get rather expensive! (I'm going to research that situation a bit over the next few days)
We'll see ... global grain supplies often look fragile and sketchy but we seem to muddle through most of the time.

www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/IDCJDW5055.latest.shtmlLast 14 days we have had 67.6mm rain - the airport anyway - spoke to a farmer yesterday west of home - his paddocks are well watered, creek running, dams now full, and getting $7/kg for lambs. Further north, not so good - Whyalla has had 8.6mm so far this month; Yunta 5.2mm; Broken Hill 2.6mm; Menindee 1.0mm; Cobar 0.6mm. We are fortunate to have dodged a bullet, it's just a shame the bullet didn't miss all of us.

Mate, go for a drive on the Arno-Wharminda road. Take a 4wd because there are sand drifts across the road in quite a few places. Astonishing how much difference 70km distance can make. I passed a couple of B-doubles bringing stock from up there down our way.
