You should still be able to buy flour etc in metal drums from wholesale places if you have an abn, maybe it's better/cheaper to purchase the drums already full. A 20-25L drum will only hold around 20kg of flour or rice anyway so shouldn't cost too much to buy 😉

Shame your not here Frosty...I have 15 in the garage Im passing to friends (used to contain white spirit)...they also make a simple faraday cage with the rubber seal removed...Ive used them for foodstuffs and non-perishables for a few years when I got them for free (yes) as a throw away whilst working as a rubber liner...do you know of any car painting firms or conveyor belt/rubber lining firms?; they throw them away...

Wish I was there again Pion. I don't know anyone in the car paint business and I wanted tins that haven't had chemicals in them. I might think outside the square and buy cheap plastic pails and store them in a metal box. Another shipping container to house plastic buckets? Could also have shelves for cans.

You may be able to speak with a manufacturer of paints/resins/etc to see if they can sell you new, unused pails. I've nabbed a few from Allnex Composites in the past... but admittedly it was via a friend who buys from them.

A few sellers of shipping containers sell them already insulated and they don’t look too expensive.

Hey if you want 20l plastic pails with lids try a gibstopper...they throw out dozens of the things monthly, they are easily washed out to 'as new' clean and have only contained plaster which is inert (as far as chemicals go)...just a thought...

A gibstopper is the guy who plasters the gib walls in a new home build...sorry hope you werent being sarcastic in which case my bad, lol...and icecream pails should work too...in fact probably better 'cause theyll have the 1 rating on the bottom for foodstuffs...

Hey if you want 20l plastic pails with lids try a gibstopper... From what I can see, a gibstopper is a plasterer? (I know a lot of kiwis, but this word has never come up in conversation) Makes me think of a long thread I saw on a travel board a while back. Question was regarding what items should always be carried, regardless of how much luggage is allowed. An Aussie said he always had at least one pair of thongs, which then had responses from people in a variety of countries asking WTH a guy would need a pair of (thong) bikinis?? I guess we don't always realise one thing that seems basic English language in our own country is something different overseas.

Australia: Thongs New Zealand: Jandals UK: Flip-flops
I once went into a pub near the beach which had a dress code, including "No Thongs". The English woman in front of me was mortified: "They check?". Hilarious.

Hey Frostbite did you manage to find a metal can supplier?
Might be able to pick up what you want from a restaurant. They may have 20l lard cans they would be happy to get rid of. I used to acquire them that way several years ago.
For your purpose you might also use plastic buckets wrapped in a few layers of old birdwire or metal fly wire. That'll be enough to stop the mice chewing thru.

Mate make sure it sits in a darkened site...I used one as storage for awhile but it sat where the sun came through a garage window...after about 6 months of UV the plastic outer shell cracked (not through but exposing the insulfoam inner)...
