This dude is some serious expert with brickwork. An amazing piece of work ... but scary for any place that gets earthquakes. Note the way the bricks are 'stacked' on the worksite!

Impressive..... Once finished that kind of structure is quite strong and self supporting. Kind of like the old Roman arches and a lot of other things like that. The physics of the engineering is impressive. Once the layer of concrete covering is dry it adds lots to the structures integrity. There is a word for that kind of concrete over coat as it were, stucko isn't the right word. And the covering is water resistant.
I don't know about earth quakes, but I would have to make sure it was OK under a considerable snow load..........
