Wait, did we just go from guys dressed up in "tac gear" to guys barely dressed all in this discussion? The TOPIC is police should dress like police. There are way too many police not looking like police. They are looking like gunmen. People are getting confused. I don't know if I can simplify the topic any further. Besides ... while all the Tacticools were doing their ninja shit a couple of country cops, looking like cops, bagged him. Put it another way ... would you trust a man dressed as a butcher to take out your tonsils?

That weren't only armed with pistols. The footage I saw at least one of them was armed with a long gun. The picture in that article shows one of them with a long gun. And yes hats off to rural police and all first responders that were there on that day. The guy in the danger zone there appears to be armed with a pistol. Quite frankly I don't get why he didn't shoot the 'highly dangerous' gunman in the face and save NZ taxpayers the cost of a trial. Strikes me as standard OH&S in that situation. Their work is exemplary in the extreme.

I agree with everything you said Noreseman except that last line. "He hasn't got time to ID or decipher the white text on the gat before he get a 5.56 round through the chest!" This is a preparedness website, it's about being prepared. "Most" of us here try to be aware of our surroundings and try to see this coming before it happens or at least be prepared to act appropriately when it occurs. Mate you are right on that score absolutely! I'm more specifically referencing the average bloke on the street AKA the mostly oblivious attendee at the entrance to the Christchurch Mosque etc.

The thing is, sometime cops don't want to look like cops due to operational requirements. I am not sure how it works in NZ, nor most states in Oz (I served in the Police Dept of another Commonwealth country). To start with there are plain cloth cops (some detectives, maybe VIP protection), they need to blend in until shit hits the fan,. Back in my uniform days, the only thing that Id them as cops were the Id cards and yellow reflective straps on the pistols (mostly VIP protection units) lest they draw police sniper fire . Then you get special duty units that may or may not wear uniform, especially during hostage situation, the whole world is watching so you don't want to be seen too easily. The press will be watching for cars with fully geared cops. Then when situations allows, of course full gear is preferable. I do personally think black uniform is bull shit (some shades of grey or even tan is better in urban area), and camp is just stupid in cities although it may be a cost thing, easy to score cheap deal along with miliary contract (think some European police unit).
This is a far more complex situation than just wanting cops to look like cops. Yes maybe it should be considered, but surely there are another thousand things more important in the list.

And we used cop the most shit from soldiers, most have the uniform rule of the law of war ingrained in their brain... Cops are not soldiers, same rules don't apply.

All that wannabe sf tacticool gear is to scare the sheeple into submission. In a manner of speaking, yes. Works on most criminals who don't have a death wise too. Same reason why cops on motorcycles favour(ed) mirror sunglasses, no eye contact, all the offender sees is himself, it's bloody daunting. Is not like tacticool cops beat the shit out of civilians regularly, cops here have too much red tape already. How many people are actually scared of cops in Oz?

The “SAS’ look-a-likes were members of the Special tactics group. There are two full time squads (Auckland and Christchurch) and they provide the offensive high risk role. As opposed to the Armed Offenders squad who are drawn from frontline police roles and are primarily defensive and focused on cordon and contain and are not full time. These are likely off-duty STG officers wearing what they were wearing at home and grabbed what are gear could, There are photos of on duty ones but hard to tell difference from AOS as both dress in black - but STG have different ballistic helmets. They can dress in either black or camo and work closely with the SAS counter terrorist squadron. My work dealings with them is they are professional and skilled. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Tactics_GroupI think both arresting police officers had M4s and glocks - most frontline cars have both in a safe.
