Good link. Re baking soda, stored it eventually loses its potency, and the bag starts to expand. Instead buy bicarb soda and Cream of Tartar, both in the baking aisle of Coles/Woolies...the recipe if I remember correctly is 1 part cream of tartar to 2 parts bicarb soda...but a simple search will allow you to verify and confirm for yourselves. Salt: a good idea is to have low-salt containers...a mixture of Potassium and Sodium. I have also stored some pink Himalayan salt, for the extra minerals it has.
Can buy bulk bags of Bicarb soda from a feed store, and also Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts). Can soak in a warm bath with a couple of cupfuls of E/salts, to relieve sore muscles and the body can uptake the minerals during the soaking.
Re how many Oxygen absorbers to use in each bag, depends on the size of the mylar bag, some are large 5 gallon size, that fit inside a large bucket with lid, these will require more than one or two absorbers.
Can check the LDS website for the number required to sufficiently remove all the air in the sealed mylar bag.
Other sizes, especially the 1 gallon bag, is what I have used. And even there I have sometimes used up to 4 or 5 absorbers in each bag.
I don't want any nasty surprises when I eventually open these bags and find they haven't been completely sucked out of air and the contents then spoil; when I need the contents the most.
After sealing the mylar bags, (a wooden bread board and run the open edge over with a hot iron) I leave them sitting on the floor overnight to check that each bag has sealed up without air. In the morning all the packets are are tight as a drum, so be sure to flatten the sealed bags out as flat as possible, as once they have set, that is how they will have to be packed into a large bucket, vermin proof, with a screw top lid.
I have found that when I open up a new bag of oxygen absorbers, need to work quickly as they start to work immediately, and become warm to the touch, thereby losing some of their potency, before they are even in the bag. And would rather use the remaining absorbers than take the chance on them being wasted before I have another batch of rice or pasta etc to seal up.
I ordered my mylar and oxygen absorbers over the phone from the USA. The LDS handle all the orders.
Thank you for the good links.
Hope you find the below link helpful - scroll down to the bottom of the article, but above the comments and will find the nuclear skills PDF for free download, lots of good info in there.
