Surpisingly..... We have a lot of apples here in the north. Near us mostly in and around the river bottom. Very, very few are good enough to go to the table. Very few are good enough for butter, jelly, sauce or any table use.
We slice and dry about a ton of apples for livestock. Mostly our rabbits. We make and freeze rough sauce from apples crab apples, rose hips for chickens and geese. Bring a container into the house, when it is thawed it goes into the chicken bucket with other kitchen stuff.
To this rough sauce we add oat meal, oil sun flower seeds, cheap on sale bird seed or chicken scratch grain drying the mix as fruit rings for rabbits.
My favorite is a thick apple butter, with a little extra cinnamon and less nut meg or clove than listed. That butter and made from scratch pan cakes are the best..
