Stolen off another forum..
Ball of cotton twine. (the one pictured is 80 feet long)
Immerse ball in melted scrap candle wax. Let it soak until it doesn't release bubbles. Remove & let it cool & harden.
End result
Easy to ignite & burns with a large flame envelope
(2 feet balled up a little)
Unravel & lace around 2 feet into, through, around foraged tinder (pine needles, cedar or birch bark, tiny twigs, wood shavings, etc., & ignite string tinder tail.
Compact, waterproof, indefinite shelf life, easy to unravel as much as you want & will ignite a lot of fires
Tips:
Add 10% charcoal lighter fluid to the melted candle wax. Doing so will increase the flammability of the end result.
-----
Add 10% stearin to the melted wax. Doing so will increase the melting temperature of the hardened ball to around 82C.

Cotton wool smeared with vaseline makes a great fire starter too. They store easily in an old medicine tablet bottle.

Um..... Don't know how I quoted this post without my comments showing... Duh...
Anyway... I surely am going to try this.. I have made lots of fire starters with egg cartons, fine chipped bedding shavings, and melted crayon wax. They worked well.
