Interesting.... Kind of sounds like a bush we have here called a choke cherry... Bright red, soft, berry, very bitter raw, makes most excelent jam.

I wonder what North American growing zone snow berry would prosper in ?? ?? We are zone 2.. Hard to find thing compatable with this area..
