We are already starting to see the roll out of facial recognition cameras in Australia, it's only a matter of time before they are rolled out in every city

Yep, sad days. Good for nailing crims but bad in terms of potential for adding 2 + 2 and getting 5 when it comes to establishing a pattern of life. I remember reading an article about how the Chinese monitor the social behaviour of people aka where they are seen and how often and then companies like life insurance/health insurance alter the policies they offer based on the risk they assess from the persons social history.

Unfortunately 'they' don't really need cameras to track peoples movements, social networks, shopping habits and personal interests ... that's what smart phones are already for! Plus they can eavsedrop!
Wonder what the penalties for 'camera evasion' are? When they come in to use in Australia will Costa have to shave off his beard?

Spent 2 weeks in a small city on the mainland of China and was sure as hell a huge eye opener. Quite frightening knowing it will probably be like that here soon enough with the facial recognition and other things.

There are already facial recognition cameras all over the place in China. They rolled out the then-latest version in the train stations a couple of years ago, which have since picked up on thousands of suspects the cops were looking for. There are also license plate recognition cameras all over the place (practically every street around the area I live), so have got used to having my plate scanned and recorded every time we go out.
Not sure where all the data is going, but the camera and data storage companies must be making a killing out of all the systems.
