thats a good point. Though for bushwalking, even up to 72 hours, a portable battery back or one of them Goal Zero Solar chargers would be sufficient, as long as you are charging 1.2v Eneloops.
but why i like a pot, is the use of water as the cooling factor, coz peltiers need a difference in temp to work. Maybe a smaller "cup" rather than a pot would do the trick. A cup could still cook rice or beans and yet, cool the peltier sufficiently to generate a charge.

True, you couldn't just "throw it in the fire". Yes maybe a smaller version with just a cup-sized cooker is the go. Or how about a long(ish) heat sink, ie just a length of ali, put that in the fire and have the peltier out in free air. I would love to play with this idea but am several months away from being able to experiment with toys I'm afraid

for biolite, the purpose of the fan is to use the free air to cool the peltier just that since the peltiers are generating current, they'd just use the energy generated to power the fan. quite ingenious actually. Just that water absorbs a heck lot of heat! haha
