Nice article - I've been ordering native edible seeds and starting to grow them - native potato, berries, etc.

Spent many hears hacking around in the central deserts with Warlpiri, Pintupi, Arrente, Luritja, Kokotha and Arabunna learning everything they were willing to share. Out there they say they thrived when it rained and suffered when it didn't. The main food in the desert areas was always meat and insects, plant foods being consumed mainly for vitamins. The exception being wet years where tons of grass seed was collected and processed into little cakes. Desert raisins were another fairly reliable source of carbs. Interestingly, the limiting survival resource in the central deserts is not drinking water. It's feed for the wildlife. When the animal feed ran low the game moved out or died and the staple meat resource was drastically reduced. It will be quite different in other types of terrain. Where I live now the original inhabitants took a lot of food out of coastal waters and some important food species can be abundant or very scarce depending on what the big ocean currents are doing. My key learning from blackfellas over decades is the critical survival factor in any environment is having a detailed knowledge of where resources are under different sets of weather/seasonal conditions and where important fixed resources are (such as drinking water supplies, bee hives, fruiting trees etc.) My 'prepping philosphy' is one doesn't need a big expensive stockpile of 'stuff' to keep themselves alive ... one needs to know where to get stuff, make stuff and grow stuff.

Love it knowledge is power! Here is a booklet our mob put together in 2016 to cover our area big desert Mallee and and western NSW in case anyone is from the area it's not super detailed on things but the area is constantly losing knowledge and elders.https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au › ...PDF Ecological Cultural Knowledge - Barkindji (north of Pooncarie)
