Do you see the SHTF scenario as;
1. A sudden and catastrophic event, or
2. A slow gradual occurance??
3. Or something else??

Well I am watching for war to break out, and all the players are currently moving into position! So for me a slow build up and then the trigger will be pulled and we will suddenly be in ww3! Economic collapse same sort of thing.

similar to an avalanche. I see it as starting slow like a bunch of natural disasters every few months then every other month then every month over a period of a few years. From my POV, this had begun already a few years back and we are fast approaching, rough estimate, the midpoint where everthing is going to have a snowball effect and happen very quickly.

imho it will be one of two things, a civil war initiated due to the governments draconian attacks on our rights and on our natural resources for profit, or, a natural disaster taking about a year or two to plateau out, as OL said, natural disasters have already been increasing in intensity and frequency, the oceanic conveyors are slowing, causing further problems (if they stop we are facing another ice age after considerable flooding worldwide), so it could be either way.

A slow demise of the economy with lower wages, higher costs of living, ending with a swift and rapid decline into shtf.

Im almost exactly the same as Wayne - I see it being a gradual decline in the economy that will be helped along by some of the powers that be. This will cause an increase in unemployment, crime and civil disobedience which in term will involve increased government control to the point of martial law. From here it will quickly dissolve in to an all out chaos.
Id like to be far away from the cities when all this begins, but at least before it gets to the point of riots in the suburbs.

Civil War??? Nah, the 'she'll be right' attitude is still prevelant here, we have no weapons, or an ingrained history of fighting for our freedom. Civil War - never happen. Maybe a few demented individuals, but not society as a whole. This does not discount the mob mentality, but not a civil war. For one, we aren't as right wing as the US, I could see an uprising there, but not here - we are too complacent and not as violent a society ( which is a good thing ). re the selling of our resources, I think that as long as the majority are in their status quo, then no one will really give a damn. A natural disaster - yes - I can see this happening - and the options are many - volcanic eruptions in the south eastern states, catastrophic drought or flooding inland, cyclones northern and western areas, even tsunamis along the coast lines - all over - and as you say, it may take a year or two to return to some resemblance of normality.

hmmm, idk, if i keeps going, that she'll be right attitude will quickly be pushed aside imho. even then, idk, perhaps uprising is a better adjective for what i imagine happening. is vs the govt. and pro govt supporters.... i know plenty of people who like the idea of tightening the laws and reigns.... but yeah, nothing is exactly set in stone regarding the future hey, lol

It will be slow, i know this as im hearing it every morning on the radio and everynight on the news..
Holden...Ford..Toyota..Lots of jobs gone there, albeit over the next few years.
Qantas...going down the gurgler
Unemployment is creeping up again..
Aus purchasing $3bn worth of unmanned drones (that can take up to a ridiculous 180 staff on the ground to control)
Lots of little things...day in, day out...

wish i'd found this thread before I started my own. i'm with option two, a slow gradual thing, the economy mainly. A civil war? I wouldn't rule anything out 100% but I strongly doubt it, I'll go on record today saying that I for one believe in the Commonwealth, and you wont find me bearing arms against her. I may not always agree with our governments of the time but who really ever does?

i vote 1 a massive natural disaster... a asteroid impact.. a large enough one hits then its a never ending battle to survive.. any warning... no chance in hell
all other options listed are possible, civil war here, as much as we need it, it won't happen, in Australia we respect life, and the majority respect military and police
but there is one major society shift that will cause massive distrust and cause a full scale war, when Australia changes from a "Christian" state to a Muslim state... if this happens this will be the spark of a civil war... I guarantee it

I guarantee it Ever watch those documentaries by Stephen Hawking, trying to spot an asteroid heading for us is near impossible, apparently one the size of New York is due to pass by within the next 20 years with what he describes as "a near miss" I think your right again on your second point we as a country have a deep ingrained respect for authority, but maybe not so much from the younger generation, we were hit by our teacher in primary school (Though he got in allot of trouble for doing it) we soon learned how to show respect, kids these days are running rampant and every authority known is powerless to stop them.

so your telling me, all the cameras we have pointing at the sky can't detect a asteroid in or solar system yet we can view black holes...
I understand there is a lot of space out there...
the second part, even with the young generations massive disrespect for law and government/authority, I doubt many will have the balls to actually kill a cop.. (some do, but the new generation are a bunch of pussies, the cry over a little cut)
but on the topic of disrespect in society.. my misses and myself have noticed there is a connection between child care raised children, and poor attitude...

I'm betting on no major issue and preparing for the worst. If I were to guess about the unknowable [future] then I would guess that an economic decline similar to the great depression would be the most likely and that won't change things overnight but rather over the course of a few months. The other potential is for a pandemic which will give some warning from days to weeks and the resulting chaos and loss of services, poor supplies and follow up diseases creating a major calamity. A prepper who is not infected ought be able to wait it out.

Basically Phoenix, we can spot black holes for several reasons one being they are detectable even when you cannot "see" them, an asteroid the size of say New York City traveling at high speed out in the middle of the big black void is literally invisible with no to very little light reflecting off of it.
They get lucky and spot some once in a while but they say that it's just as likely that a really big one is coming right for us right now, we might not even see it until it reaches the light cast off of our sun, by which time it would be hopelessly too late. The odds of it happening are however very low.

I too don't prep for a reason in particular. I don't think that a SHTF scenario should shape the way you prep, I think you should prep around the possibility of different SHTF scenarios. If I were to have a guess though, I too believe that the economy will collapse before any EMP, Solar Flare, Pandemic, etc.
