Anyone got any practical tips for keeping a really dull finish on spray painted surfaces?
The hardware store spraycans can be nice and dull at first but soon as the surface gets rubbed it starts to shine up.

A gentle rub with scotchbrite or some fine grit sandpaper.

Put on one coat, while it is still wet throw or sprinkle some fine grit onto it, add another coat. This makes the paint 'bumpy' which reduces shine. It isn't perfect, the grit will wear away but it leaves dimples in the paint which break up the surface before becoming smooth eventually.
I got the idea from someone who used an old roller to paint something. The fluff from the roller came off and left little lumps everywhere in the paint!

Mud works for me I've been making stuff and modifying my shiny red quad lately. so this is where its at now. Its serving me well as a mobile shooting rig and its definitely no longer shiny! ... aside from those LEDs, they shine like wild things, no problem getting through the bush at night with those puppies turning night into day. Awesome milspec! My quad is a Honda 400 which they only ever come in bloody bright red! I also owned another one called in the US a Honda "Recon" which over there was available in an awesome green but here only Plain Jane red again! I'd love to cam my quad with multiple cans of spray on "mud", however while I use my quad for hunting I use it way more for utility on my property and I really would get some strange looks from the neighbours! My plan was to get one of these:- 1.5 x 3 mtr camo net. Put a centre split down it so I can slot it over the column, tank and seat and then tie it down on the racks and guards.

Who cares what the neighbours think. This was my quad & hunting hound before I got started (ok I already put the lights on, and he's not really the hunting hound but he does go nuts when I come in smelling of fox or rabbit). @spinifex these paints were specifically matt finish 'camo' products.

Yep you are right! Who should care! Maybe I might bite the bullet and get the cans out!

Additional tip: when the paint job is done, add (from a distance of say 50cm) a light coat of zinc spray. As this corrodes, it becomes a dull field grey, eucalypt grey or kangaroo grey (all the same).
Hence why so many people run into galv wire fences on motorbikes...
