Great Post - thanks!
I've had potato sprouts come up from scraps I've thrown in the garden, and I re-use garlic every year. I never knew you could re=grow lemon grass, and will try that soon-we eat a lot of asian food, and always use lemon grass. Was a very informative and useful site.
Would be interested in how others go too.

I have always "tailed" my spring onions and replanted them, along with garlic, leeks, onions and a lot of lettuces. When excess potatoes and onions (We buy in 10 - 20 kg bags)start to sprout we plant them too they always grow and we can always harvest from them. Got home and found a squashed tomato in the shopping bag? Thrown it out? Don't!! just pop in in the garden somewhere it will more than likely sprout and grow you a few plants, I also strip out seeds from pumpkins, watermelon, rockmelon, etc without even drying and successfully get plants at the moment my pumpkin has gone ballistic and has several on it at various stages, rockmelon and a round zucchini are all sprouting too. As we rent and have not got permission to do a vege garden yet(rolling eyes) I just pop them in amongst the other greenery. After reading the article above I'm going to experiment with Asian vege, fennel and cabbages!

I've grown sweet potatoes from one that was growing eyes in the back of the cupboard. I just planted it in the backyard in a gross patch of dirt in the backyard and it went crazy. It ended up being my eldest's first food when she started solids

The celery one isn't really true. Yes it will start growing, but by most reports once the main head of the celery starts to rot- and it will- the party is over. You won't get a new plant from it. I've tried it four times always with the same result.

I once made the mistake of throwing a few pumpkin seeds into the compost heap where I used to live. The plant went crazy but I lost my compost heap

Agree, this is a great topic. We have had success with onions and spuds so far. Have also tried and failed with pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Love sweet potato so was hoping for a success but it wasn't to be. Will be giving it another crack though
